Ok , i posted a question in the 4x2 section but apparently the right people don't frequent that section

the '03 3.7 has how many cat's? 1 , 2 or 3?

Eastern Cat shows 3 (front right, front left, and rear)

I just noticed that the PO at some point had work done to it and the rear cat was removed, assuming there was one there at all

So part 1 of my 2 part question is how many Cat's did my jeep originally have?

Part 2 is, since the rear cat is after all sensors, is my jeep still legal

No,more so no if it is a actual dealership and not one of those ma and pa small used only dealer's.

There is a federal warranty on all the cats for 8 years/80,000miles.Just go to a dealership and get it replaced with a new one.

Not sure who to call but you can get them stuck with a $2500 fine for the removed cat, threaten them with that and see if they will put one on for free.

You know I just noticed you have stated that you have the 42RLE trans, you may have the 2 cat system.Does the "mini cats" look like the ones in the pic below? If so then you have the older system with 3 cats.

yes, but not in that good of a shape haha

they appear to have heat shields around them as well

but in other words yes there are 2 gigantic sweetpotato sized cat's below the collectors

but farther down the pipe prior to the muffler theres a 2 1/2 foot section of pipe that was cut out and replaced in the typical position for a cat

by looking at eastern catalytics part list, i see the 2 front cats, and a 3rd pipe, heres the link for the section in question

http://www.car-stuff.com/carparts/jeepl ... 09006.html

it looks as if the aftermarket cat is mounted closer to the clamp that the OEM pipe but the new section of pipe in mine goes from right after the hanger to right before the clamp

with the location of the new section of pipe i'm leaning towards the idea that there WAS a cat there originally

I was hoping this wouldn't be such a complicated endevor to figure out

my service manual also shows 3 cats in a round-a-bout way

I always thought they went to two cats when they went to the 42rle(like tjkj said). Not sure if there was a short period where they still had 3 cats with the 42rle or not.

A picture would do wonders..

pretty sure my 05 has 3. Now I need to double check my thinking...

EDIT: I was wrong. The wifes 02 and daughters 03 have the 3 cat set up with the smaller ones in the front. My 05 has 2 bigger ones up there and nothing next to the muffler.

Pretty much holds true expect for '03 KJ's since that was the transition year from the 45RFE to the 42RLE,you could have anything. The '02 KJ's could have 1 of 4 different systems but they all used 3 cats.

my daughters 03 has the 3 cats like my wifes 02. I guess I need to count bolts on the tranny pan and see which tranny she has. Time to compare it to my 05 and the wifes 02. 8)

Not sure if it affects anything, but there are some applications where it's legal to replace a 3 cat system with a 2 cat system.
This might be overruled by what tjkj2002 said thou, I don't know the details. Might only apply after 8 years or 80,000 miles... I assume your Jeep had over 80,000 when you got this work done?

i'm not the one that had the work done, i had always thought something was odd under it but it didn't dawn on me what it was until this weekend, i haven't really had it that long

from the deterrioration level of the pipe that was put in, it had to have been done pretty close to the time of me getting it either by the dealer i got it from or by the PO prior to selling it
