2006KJSPORT4x4, the damage that you are showing should not have a major impact on the mechanics of the gearing. I agree, it’s poor quality and poor customer service, but I wouldn’t be overly concerned.

I wasnt too concerned about mine at first either but its hard to chip the teeth on a ring and pinion, but whos to say that whatever caused that hit didnt also cause an internal fracture, you just never know, it might last the life of your KJ but it might only last until you drive the KJ a block down the road.

Your concerns are legitimate……………

When you bought them, did you pay for new, perfect condition gears or chipped haggard ones? I'd be pissed, they'd be sending new ones.

yeah I didnt even think about the fractures until I asked my mechanic friend about it and he mentioned it and convinced me to return them and get new ones but I think Im just going to return them and use the money towards a different project.

And I would advise any and everyone with a chipped tooth whether it be on the ring or pinion RETURN IT for a new set, but you may get lucky and it will last or it may not, but it is your money.

So it looks like poor quality parts are being sent. JSC7002, so you are not going to regear now? I wasn't sure if i should bother regearing or not but if parts are crap i can't afford to be shipping them across 2 countries more than once. I may just throw in a rear locker and call it a day. 8)

I don't think its necessarily poor products, its more crappy shipping from Dana/ Spicer. And also remember that its not TrailQuest's fault as they do not stock or handle the D30a gears, I was unhappy with them for a little while then I remembered that they just sell them they don't have anything else to do with them. I think if you have bigger tires then yes it will help you out a lot, but I am not wheeling the KJ anymore once I buy my trail Jeep. Plus I did my gearing ratio math and the 3.73 gears aren't too far off for me, although I know I will see a benefit when I tow but that's about it and last time I figured it up it was going to take me 2 years of my 12k miles per year before I broke even and I'm not driving quite as much now and in 2 years I should be about ready to graduate and I'll more than likely buy a truck then for work.

New Gear Ratio = New Tire Size x Old Gear Ratio / Old Tire Size.

Yes, i think the only benefit for regearing would be gas mileage for me since i can still go offroad anywhere i could before. My wheels are stock and my tires lighter so that may make a difference. I do notice a power loss especially going up hills but its not that bad. I was thinking another option if you wanted lower gears on the trail would be something like this.

Took the gears to a local guy I know through work that deals with rebuilds and the like and told me that yea it sux that the teeth have some chips and nicks and what not but that he has seen worse and that where my nicks and stuff are it should not hinder the performance of the components if they were to be installed. He also gave all the parts a good once over and said that everything looks solid, no visible cracks with a black light or anything were found. So now I am confident that the gears will work, but I will still let them know about the POOOOOOOR shipping methods of the product. Here's to looking up!!!

good idea. I think I will take mine to a local shop that does jeep mods and have them take a look too.

Is it really poor shipping methods? It seems a little odd that you can chip a solid metal tooth even if it is a little loose in the box. Perhaps they're getting rid of a few rejects.

Just because there is a small chip and no visible cracks with a black light does not mean that there is not internal fractures. You paid your money for gears not chipped ones, I would get a refund but thats just me I guess. :?

You should be able to get the r&p magnafluxed to see if there are any cracks whatsoever. A local machine shop should be able to so that for you.

Well I picked it up today.

Need to do the break in period for a 100 miles, so no playing for awhile.

Issues that were encountered:
The rear install kit did not come with axle seals
The C-clips had to be ground down to fit on
The rear yoke had to be ground down to fit the Motive gears

Other then that no issues witht the install. Will report more as time goes on.

$980 to have it done.

I thought the break in period was 500 miles :?
Im anxious to hear what kind of improvements you get. Grinding the c-clip is no biggie we had to do that on my DL.

The overall brake in period is 500, but need to really take it easy for the first 100.
No towing or any heavy stuff for 500.

Then change fluid out.
