Ok guys. I was under tonight taking off the tranny skid for a morning routine service at the dealer and I see that my rear end is soaked! It wasn't that way a couple weeks ago when I did my last oil change. Give me some ideas what I am looking at tonight if possible as I have to see the dealer in the morning. Here are some pics.

the way it's radiated and slung up and out it looks like a pinion seal

Yep pinion seal, takes about 30mins to replace and about $15 for the seal. You need a in/lbs torque wrench though.

Check your fluid level,if low add and check often until you get it fixed.Leaving it unfixed for to long can allow junk past that seal and destroy the pinion bearings, that will be $1000,thank you come again  .

theyre prolly gonna wanna charge you 200 bucks for doin the pinion seal, if its anything less than that you've got a good dealer who isn't trying to screw you over

and yep, tj's totally right, commonly overlooked aspect of oil leaks

they go both ways, oil out, trash/dirt in

Do not let them replace your rear diff fluid, that is $100 saved alone,if they require it get your own(the correct weight) and have then use it instead of there bulk stuff that is a little overpriced.Having the trash-lok will add alot to the price also,OEM friction modifier is very expensive.

the bulk stuff is almost as expensive as the purple goodness isn't it?

shouldn't they just be able to top off the diff or will it need to be drained for the repair? Can you tell I have no diff experience?

OK, dealership did the tranny service and replaced the pinion seal. The seal replacement was covered under my Carmax warranty less a $75 deductable so my total bill for everything was only $220. I also got a discount for being a member of the local Jeep club. This dealership is Mod friendly! 8)

well that's not bad 75 buck deductable is pretty much the seal and some labor

that's good stuff! i am very happy that everything turned out good for you, it's not so common these days but there are still good guys out there fixin jeeps

the dealer here in Greenville is pretty decent.. the one in New Bern on the other hand.. i wouldn't let sharpen a lawn mower blade, ya know how it goes!

Glad ya got it fixed! Did they do the rear end service too or ya still gotta do that?

I halfway feel like I'm tryin to push these things off on people, but when I swapped my diff cover for a rockcrusher, i put a lubelocker gasket on it

now keep in mind, i've been servicing rear ends.. (ok jeeze i already here ThunderbirdJunking typing haha) for years and I have to say i hate using RTV to seal diff covers, i always get a drip of grease across the rtv which ends up breaking down the rtv after i torque everything back down and it ends up leaking, not quite so bad with gasketless tranny pans, but I hate the cork deals too

If the lubelocker I bought (was like 11 bucks) last's for a few services, I will feel like it was more than worth it, so far it hasn't seeped a drop, it was easy to put on, it had a high quality feel to it, i wasn't worried about pinching and destroying it, i was very impressed with it and I don't impress easily with products like that

I mean most of the diesels i worked on used saltwater and a paintbrush to seal the heads so .. really basic and crude technology there that worked

just thought I'd throw it out there, I'm def. going to see if they make other gaskets for say.. the tranny pan and such, if so, and it works as well as the rear diff gasket has.. i'll gladly put the lubelocker decal that came with it on my side window (I'm not one of those decal jockeys hehe)

Really glad ya got it fixed, is the other jeep going in next? I'm halfway siding with TJKJ that it might not be just a tranny leak because of the oil-wetness ahead of the tranny but it does look like maybe the tranny pan is leakin a lil bit at the front edge, which i mean, it happens, ya kinda expect it after awhile

for reference, how far is that dealer you're using from Raleigh NC?

Dealer is in Manassas, Virginia and I am going to clean the other one and see if I can tell where it is coming from before taking it in.
