Cooper teamed with Resilient to make the one for the Humvee. It's a 37 inch tire with a tread design by cooper. "The tire can sustain gunfire damage and still travel 75 mph which is more than twice as fast as the 30 mph a conventional Mumvee run-flat can travel after being shot." Petersen's 4 wheel and off-road magazine said they will be eventually making them for commercial, recreational, and for off-road use. I'm sure that cooper, Michelin, and probably other's are in competition to see who can get them out on the market first.

Actually a HMMWV would be hard pressed to get much pass 70mph,less for a uparmored M1113/M1114 with 190hp pushing 12,000lbs+.A stripped M1123,no armor and no cargo, may hit 75mph and only because of the O/D transmission. The one piece rubber runflats are also rated for 50mph for 50 miles, which is more then enough in the current urban environments that they are needed in.

I have not seen every vehicle or weapon in the military, so you have me on that one. However, after spending almost 10 years being a mechanic and recovery specialist in combined arms units and then another 6 years as a Scout pilot whose primary missions includes convoy security, I've seen just about everything the regular Army has, most of the ground vehicles the Air Force has, and a pretty decent amount of Navy and Marine Corps vehicles. Also, as stated above, these aren't even being fielded until 2011. Now that we know how big mine is ....

Just because you are "well versed" in military vehicles and haven't seen em doesn't mean these aren't going into production sooner or later, like 2011. Just because they aren't out right now, doesn't mean they don't work. They apparently do work and will be in use. That was the point I was making with my original post. So, like I said, if they are good enough for the military, than they will work for everyone else I bet.

As seen in the photo, they're already being field tested at Cooper's tire-test facility in Texas. Once they have finished testing, "they'll be delivered to the U.S. Army for further evaluation."

Chocolate chip ... my favorite!! Thanks Inc!

I give up and I'll hold off on explaining the military (specifically Army) fielding process.

I've seen something about these tires on TV. The tread itself gets replaced and you continue to use the center section. So the theory is that the spokes last much longer than the tread. Theoretically through several sets of treads.

looks suitable for urban, high hazard environment

i'd never put them on my vehicle and expect any sort of offroad performance no matter how well they worked off road because they'ed almost instantly be unballanced until you fine tooth combed them to clear out dirt mud and rocks from the spokes

plus theres no sidewall for rockin and such, no way to 'air down'

i saw a stryker years ago with a similar tire being tested and it turned out a quick fail due to the weight of the vehicle and lateral stressors causing premature wheel/tire structure failure and separations

as for hmmwv speeds.. yeah only time i ever remember hitting anything close to 70 was due to going 50 prior to driving over a dune that dropped about 70 feet. I'm sure we were going 70 by the time we leveled out and got all 4 back on the sand

to do that sort of speed in a hmmwv you're talkin about a really long flat or downgraded stretch asphalt or heavily packed dirt or sand thats really smooth

Yeah, TBJ, Michelin would never do anything stupid like the TRX line you mentioned....Good point.

501's comments about them getting loaded up with ice/snow/mud and at least wrecking the balance are very valid. No one else seems to want to address this issue?

The military tire is supposedly going to the military in 2011 for evaluation, not use, from stuff I have read. BIG difference between those two terms. Everything I have read has been from a company trying to promote itself, so the validity of the claims remain unproven. There were no Army, Marine, or DOD reps in the article posted. Why wait 2 years to evaluate this product? How long is the eval. process? I am pretty sure that the humvee runflats do not require air as the article claims makes my BS detector go off......But hey, everything about the military version is from an article posted on the 'net, so it must be true

Just settle down folks! I see no reason to reinvent the wheel here........ :-)r Although if these things ever "go live," companies can make a fortune with a product to cover those ugly mofo's up....

The HMMWV's current run flat is a one piece double internal beadlock and run flat which is solid rubber with metal reinforcing rings built in.There are 2 other older designs, one rubber and one magnesium. They are a royal pain to install besides the magnesium ones but those are not allowed anymore but work awesome.Oh and since the HMMWV also uses a double internal beadlock also there is no worry about loosing the tire off the rim.

Here is a pic of the HMMWV rims with the beadlocks/two piece runflats installed without the tire.

I can vouch personally that sometimes military evaluations of new stuff can or can not take long.I was on the team that fielded the new Marines 7.5 ton trucks made by Oshkosh, those took about 3-4 years to be introduced into operation.I also was part of the team fielding a fast attach vehicle to replace the M151 Jeeps,it was made by Mercedes and it did not pass,to complicated for field repair, was shot down in less then a year.

These have been in development for "a long while". The only reason they started was because the military was interested. They tried to bond a sidewall onto it and it kept getting ripped off. There is talk that they will bond them to the tread rubber and then mount a "beadlock" ring of some sort to help hold it in place. The spokes can be built in varying flex rates depending on the application that it is being used for. They have been nicknamed "Tweels". There are rumors that they will go into production soon, but none of the big manufacturers will announce anything more than that they are still in R&D. The picture of the car that the OP used has run for 35k miles with them on now. I like the idea, but will wait to get all emotional about it until there are more than million of them on the road and they have proven themselves. As a side note, the military tried a version of these in the late 50's but they didn't have the lightweight, strong polymers that we have today. They made them out of aluminum and had so many problems that the idea was quickly scrapped.

Michelin reminds ThunderbirdJunkie of Sony.

They have the capacity to make, and do make, some great things...but all this money spent on R&D and this and that and the other (see: TRX wheels/tires) could definitely be better spent improving what's currently available.

Case in point...the Michelin Hydroedge. 90k mile tire, awesome wet traction beyond anything else on the market. What's the problem with that? They are noisier than ThunderbirdJunkie's MT/R's.

If they'd just use what they've learned and build a quiet, capable, long-lasting LTX M/T, ThunderbirdJunkie would buy it. If they'd make a good, long-lasting all-season performance tire, ThunderbirdJunkie would buy it.

The problem is, Michelin's tires either perform well or wear well. There is no middle ground.
