Those of you that have done this, how is the sound quality? Did you notice a big improvement with a aftermarket HU? I know a bunch of you are running Pioneers and I am considering doing the same thing.

I had the premium speakers with my KJ and my aftermarket HU does not sound any better or worse.

aftermarket headunit was the same quality as factory in my opinion. I upgraded the speakers a while later... after that I noticed a difference at higher volume.

I think just upgrading the speakers, especially the one's in the dash, would make a huge difference. I found a pair of Boston Acoustics for $65 the other day and really thought about getting them. 3.5"

When you start changing out speakers and head units remember this.. just because the head unit says 50X4 Watts or whatever that's usually overrated, If you really wanna hear the difference get an aftermarket head unit Alpine, Kenwood, or Eclipse because they usually put out the most Volts on the Amp out side, and hook up a 4 channel amp to run your fronts and backs with a mono class D amp for your subwoofer and man you will be bumpin and humpin Anyways just my 2 cents..

I noticed a significant difference when I added a AM HU. Better volume and less distortion, on a higer end HU. The AM HU had RDS which I needed in Germany so it was the only reason I switched. Now that I haev all the other stuff installed it is WQY better than any Infinity system but takes up alot more room as well. Give and take.

BTW I am a HUGE (Home) Infinity fan, just not in the car anymore.

When I replaced my HU with Kenwood, I noticed much better sound, both highs and lows. Especially with Bass EX whatever it is called in Kenwood that extends the bass for add'l split second, it made a huge difference. Stock system is OK but speakers are more capable than what stock HU can put out as stock HU is very limited in tweaking the sound.

The reason I went with aftermarket HU was not to get better sound, but was to get USB, HD RADIO and AUX input abilities, nothing beats USB and better bass respone, though.

There are about 5 different HUs ranging from $100 to $300, have exact same specs/output/amp, etc.. but as price goes up they have features and fancier screens.
Just get the lowest end in the same line, and it will sound just as good as highest end one on same model line.
