I'm trying to decided on a seat belt system for the cj...

On a 4 point the shoulder straps would attach to a horizontal bar that's part of the cage ( located just below the shoulders ) and the lap straps would attach to a bar on either side of the seat neat the bottom running parallel to the seat.

On a 5 point the shoulder and lap straps mount the same, but where does the submarine strap mount to ? a bar under the seat ?

Aside from the submarine strap, is there any difference between a 4 and 5 point harness ?

I'm not planning to do any crazy stuff, but want the harness just in case I wind up on my side... which would be better to use ?

The submarine strap is the only difference between the two. The only thing the submarine strap does is keep you from sliding out of the harness. I have seen them bolted to the floor or to a cross bar that is under the seat.

Make sure it has a quick release on the buckle so you don't get stuck inside once you stop rolling  .

i'd just go with the 4

the extra support helps keep ya from bouncin around in your seat so much under normal wheeling circumstances
, i've rolled a few and never slid down wearing conventional seatbelts and you typically don't unless you get knocked out or let go of the steering wheel

a good beer belly will help you keep from sliding down too :D

I actually like the latch and link buckles better. The camlocks are easier to get into but with the latch and links you can just pull one lever and all 4/5/6 straps release at once.

Bear in mind that once strapped in, your body will feel every shock that the vehicle does. without a little freedom to bounce around your guts get jostled more.

It's a trade off. 4/5/6 point harnesses definitely restrain you more but you do feel every little bump.

One other big downside to 4/5 point harnesses is that, if they are worn properly, you lose the ability to lean out the window and look at your tire placement... might be an issue, might not.

I would take the 4 point as well over the 5... no need for an anti-submarine strap in a low speed trail rig.

Also, you'll need to go all-or-nothing with the harnesses. If you don't wear them tight enough (cinched down hard) you actually have an increased chance of compression injuries in the spine as well as the collarbones.

But more importantly... let's see some pics of this CJ
:D

Is there anything wrong with getting a 5 and using the sup belt when needed ? ( using the 5 as a 4 ? ) or do all the buckles need to be in the locking mechanism for it to properly latch...

Depends on the model whether you can leave the 5th pt diconnected or not. To clarify, the sub strap is not there to keep you from sliding under but to counteract the tension of the shoulder straps pulling the lap belts up off your hips. Also, stay away from the rotary style as they can be fouled by dirt. Latch/link style is slower to harness up but will not be fouled.

DING DING DING, correct answer.

You don't want the 2 shoulder straps pulling the lap belt up in a head on hit or accident. That would cause the lap belt to move up to you soft stomach, and injure some rather important organs.
