Due to limited budget this year I won't be able to put a lift on my 04 sport. I'm going to put skids and tow hooks and hopefully sliders. Can I still take it wheeling and just watch my lines?

The first year a had my kj I did not have a lift yet and still went to moab and colorado. Like you said you just have to watch your lines and go a little slower on the ruff spots. I did not have any problems or damage. That said it's alot easier with a lift (you don't have to worry about bottoming out as much.)

Yes you just have to watch your lines and go little slower. This kj is the first jeep I've owned I couldn't wait to hit the trails so I just went for it.

Here's mine all over Moab when it was stock... shoudl be plenty of proof that it will do fine... I just had skids and tow hooks (even the stock tires)

Take it slow and easy, learn to mentally see the trail below your tires as you wheel and always try to go w/ someone else in case you need a spot or tug. Oh and most important..... Tread Lightly!

Great thing about wheeling stock is you will develop line picking ability over time, learn where your Jeeps clearance and limits are and it should make you a better wheeler overall once you do lift it.

edit:
Just noted posts above, weren't there when I typed this :)

Hell yeah it is. I wheeled the crap outta mine before I got a lift. I gotta 04 too. It's good to learn how to wheel before you get the lift, then you'll be that much better with a lift. You need to take it out and learn how it reacts. See what it's like to be off camber (tilted left or right), Learn where it'll spin the wheels and what kinda lines you need to take. Don't follow Wranglers around, you'll just get frustrated. Libertys need to take different lines sometimes because of the IFS. If your trying to climb a dirt hill and keep getting stopped on 2 wheels teeter-tottering, then try giving it a LITTLE more gas next time. The momentum can take you over the dip/bump and you'll be back on 3 wheels again. Don't try crawling over rock gardens though unless you have skids and diff covers. You could easily break something that would stop you in your tracks and require you to be towed out. Take some easy trails and find "play" areas to test out your heep. Don't forget to air down some before you head out offroad. It'll make a huge difference. Get a portable air pump that hooks up to your battery for airing back up before you hit the highways again. What kinda tires do you have?

This is one of the trails I did stock. I had to be pushed a few times when the wheels would spin:

wheel it like the cops are after you... thats what i do, probally cuz my wifes a cops and when i take it wheeling shes usually chasing me, cursing her head off!

no lift isn't really that big of a deal, tires are what gets you where you need to go, For less than $30 you can get an inch or so out of you lib by doing a clevis/rear iso install. Thats enough room to squeeze in some 245/75's with some pounding and trimming. that the first thing I would do, then when you get a lift you already have the tires.

And as far as damage goes its part of the game, you can't play with fire and not expect some charred flesh now n then. I run bone stock, no skids, rails, nothing, and yes i have a few dings, but being careful and making sure you have a good spotter will save your stupid and rocker panels.

I've been wheeling the kj pretty stock for a year now and besides the blown engine & transmission i had  All i can really say has happened is a small ding on my drivers side rocker, crossmember and muffler, the front license plate got ripped off, and typical trail rash. And I've wheeled from icky goey claymud to some bad arse rock gardens, taking every line that the kj could possibly do. Hell my wife even jumped the darn thing like a baja racer completely bottoming it out!

bottom line be carefull, buy better tires, don't wheel alone, and have fun!
