Is line X the cat’s meow or does it really matter? I’m going to have my gecko rack lined and probably the rock rails, so I'm wondering what y’all recommend.

Line X is the best IMO, but whatever you get, get the UV Protectant. There are other brands out there that are good though.

If it comes out of a spray can or applied by brush it really isn't worth a dang.Line-X is the best out there, make sure you get the UV coating.

wouldn't that stuff rub off fairly easy on your rock rails once you start scraping over rocks?

Well, I bet it would if they got really used. I know fork lift forks take off Line X with relative ease from a truck bed. I would pass on doing the rails myself. I did mine myself and was reapplying it a lot and it got old. Granted my stuff is cheaper than Line X but I if you plan on using and abusing the rails, it will mess the liner up.

Troy, I might take my rack over to:

LINE-X of Colorado Springs
905 South Tejon
Colorado Springs, CO 80903
USA Phone: (719)635-8626

How far is that from Marty's place?

YES and NO. Line-X doesn’t come off easy. It’s going to take severe scraping with a sharp rock to take it off. My Dad’s truck bed is lined with LINE-X and he’s loaded, hauled, and unloaded heavy 100lb - 300lb landscaping rocks without the LINE-X coming off. He used a front end loader to drag some of these rocks on and off his bed. You can dent the bed of the truck and the line-x is still intact. I’m guessing that bumps and bruises from normal trail abuse will not take it off. That’s why they use it in truck beds and on tools, it can take a lot of abuse.

Now for those of you who use your rock rails to balance and maneuver yourself over rocks, then yes, your LINE-X may be in jeopardy.

I’d think that for a roof rack the spray on would hold on pretty good. It’s not going to endure the harsh conditions that your undercarriage would.
When I lived in TX we sprayed a go-cart’s underbelly with some 3M rubberized undercoating and it help pretty good.

Line-X doesn't have UV protection anymore.... It was replaced with Line-X XTRA... UV protection and Kevlar added...
Make sure the dealer carries the XTRA, If not try to find one that does...
It's worth the $100 more... Trust me...

I didn’t want to say anything, but you were the exact one I was thinking of. :D I’ll never forget the Chinaman gulch trail. That was the day when I saw the KJ do things that I didn’t think was possible.  8)

Im all Herculined out on the lower half of the KJ. First year i did it I skimped and didnt get the UV protection stuff. Well after a year the sun beat the crap out of it worse than rocks and scrapes. I redid it that year with the UV and it still looks almost new two years later!

Def get the UV protection! I actually bought a couple bottles of it just in case I need touch up or I feel like recoating it.

Are you saying it's spray on?

You, Me? Herculiner is best rolled on with a foam roller so you get the maximum thickness and grit. Once that dries for a little you then paint or roll on the UV protector. The two liquids are different bottles.... not sure if you could mix so it protects throughout, interesting thought though.
