I am not a medical practitioner by any stretch of the imagination, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night, so...
The only time I've completely lost a nail is when I had the under-nail contusion that had to be "drained" with a paperclip and a lighter (seriously, the doc in the emergency room used this tactic...and he borrowed MY lighter to do it!).
I have had my fair share of injuries, including smashed fingers and toes. As a matter of fact, I'd have enough "fair share" to cover my neighbor, my wife, my dogs, and a few of our friends...so they should be covered. I'm not clumsy per se...just active.
Anyway, I've had decreased nail growth following an injury, but only one complete loss. The impact was focused entirely at the base of the nail, causing the aforementioned under-nail contusion that was later drained. Since it was all the way at the base of the nail, I had the wonderful pleasure of waiting for the whole thing to grow out and then wait for the new nail to grow in. Quite the lovely experience, let me tell you (sarcasm).
Usually, when the impact is spread over a larger area, I have only had decreased growth of the nail. For about a month the nail grows really thin. But it has always thickened back up.
I hope your healing continues as well as it seems to have been progressing this week!
