Thanks for the information! I think going with the clevis lift is the way to go. tjkj2002 said I would be losing articulation by adding the OME CRD HD Coils whereas the clevis lift with the OME gasser HD’s would give me the same height as the OME CRD HD’s but allow for flex.

i can not tell that i lost any articulation when adding the OME CRD HD coils.. if i did it's such a small amount that i can not notice it. adding 3 clevis lift will gain back height.. but not the ride quality i was after. i'd still suggest the coil swap :)

That’s not what I wanted to hear……… More money spent isn’t what I need either…… Thanks for the report though. Has the CRD coils gotten any softer since you installed them? Would you say it rides fairly soft? I don’t mind going with the CRD coils if it’s not going to ride like a hay wagon. But if you think the CRD coils flex just as well, then…………… :? I might have to think about this some more. 8) I’m also using the words “flex” and “articulation” interchangeably, so I hope I’m correctly interpreting what tjkj2002 was trying to communicate as he referred to a lose of “articulation.”

i was thinkin Flex was wheel up travel and articulation was wheel was down travel, i guess we need a dictionary thread heh

my KJ rides and handles exactly like it did with the frankenlift prior arb/winch... no hay wagon here :) plus i had contact with something every small bump i went over since the added weight bounced up and down more over the bumps and now it's quiet as a mouse and no rubbing anywhere since i got the height back... so it handles like it's on rails.... has no noises or rubbing, and rides like a frankenlift! i couldnt be happier with them. and it's not a lot of $ to switch because someone will buy your old OME HD coils in a second!

agreed with 2006. Our setup is very similar. now i didnt have a franky to compare it to, but front end flex has always left alot to be desired for me... but it is no better or worse than my last set up. but i never run w/o my sway bar.

As far as I know, the two terms can be used interchangeably. However, articulation and flex refers to the maximum upward and downward tire travel that you get from the suspension. There are two types of flex. First, you have “useful flex” and then you have “maximum flex.” “Maximum flex” is where the vehicle is so flexed out that there is very little weight on the tire, which may result with little traction. “Useful flex” allows you to flex out and still have good weight distribution and ground contact for traction. I think tjkj2002 is saying that our KJ’s already have very little articulation, therefore by adding the CRD coils we are minimizing opportunities for “useful flex.” For example, the difference in OME coils (OME 400lb and OME 500lb) would mean that the OME 400lb coils would flex downward and upward MORE than the OME 500lb coils. More upward and downward suspension (coil) flex would result in more articulation. Due to the limitations of the IFS, our KJ’s do not have to worry about “maximum flex.” So in this case scenario, it would be possible to define flex as suspension (coil) travel and define articulation as how well the front suspension works together to maximize opportunities for traction.

The only way to know for sure is to compare two KJ’s with the same front end weight and lift (except for one having OME 400’s and the other with OME 500’s). Then compare both lifts by running the same obstacle. For example: If the one running the OME 400lb coils “DOES” make contact with the TERRAFLEX bumpstops and the other (with the OME 500lbs coils) “DOES NOT” make contact with the TERRAFLEX bumpstops, then we know who has more flex (articulation), right?

I would think that those needing the CRD OME coils because of the extra weight of bumper and winch would get the same "useful" flex as a person that has the OME HD coils but just the stock plastic bumper because there is more weight to compress the CRD coils so it, in theory, would even out. At least in my mind. Instead of the the HD coils being overcompressed with a winch and bumper, the CRD coils would get you back to where you need to be for optimum travel with all that extra weight. I get that the CRD coils are stiffer by quite a bit, but there is also quite a bit of extra weight there to do the compressing. I do think it is a bad idea to run CRD springs on a jeep with no extra weight that isn't a diesel and you would gain nothing if you did because the jeep is too light to work the coils so you would lose that useful flex like in your test you mentioned. Add a few extra hundred pounds in a bumper and a winch and now your jeep will weigh enough to flex those CRD coils just like a jeep with HD coils flexes theirs without the extra weight. At least I would think that would be the case. Ask someone like Hood or 2006 KJ if they can flex their CRD springs on their gassers with their winches and bumpers and still get useful travel like they did before al the extra weight.

Actually this is your fault. If your KJ didn’t look so freakin’ sweet then this conversation wouldn’t ever happened! :D

Okay, last point them I’m done! INC, I think you’re absolutely right. In theory, and as Tom pointed out, the clevis lift allows you to move the shock higher up in the clevis. With the clevis, you can regain the same height as the CRD coils but retain your ability to articulate. Within the context of having a bumper and winch, we know that OME CRD coils is going to give you a firmer ride with less flex whereas the clevis lift with OME 400lbs’s is going to give you a softer ride, provide an approximate height as the CRD coils, but give you more flex. Like I said, until you can compare both lifts it will be hard to measure how much flex is being negotiated. After all, we’re talking about a 100lb spring rate difference, which is definitely measurable.

Well, I thought I was finished....
My front driveshaft came yesterday... All Rusty.. Soo.... I had to do some more sanding, priming, and painting...

I was able to use up the rest of the red paint...
But since TOM thinks I need to paint my rear calipers, driveshaft, and axle... I may need to get some more.. AFTER it's finished snowing!

You should not have painted the driveshaft,it can throw the balance off.

Well I figured since I took off a coat of rust... A coat of paint will be fine...

"light" coat of paint will not do much to it, I have painted some of mine before without ill effects . Now I would not put 25 coats on and then more in 6 months but...................
