Which shim kit can I buy to finish my install of my DTT in the D30a. No one I've called can tell me which kit will fit. My best guess at this point is the 2000ish TJ's kit. All I need are the diff side bearing shims.

Also, if you know the backlash (is it .007 to .010?) and bearing preload, I'd like to know in case the shop that I have check it doesn't know.

On a positive note. I think I've discovered that I'm geared to 4.10 already :). (with the v6)

The jeep was lifted, with a few mods including bigger tires when I bought it. I pulled the ring gear out and it has the teeth marking as 41 10. That should be 41/10=4.10 gear set. Sweet!

No shim kit needed if your retaining the same gear set and only swapping the carrier, reuse the old shims.

You need to count the # of teeth on the ring gear, pinion to be sure, those markings do not mean gear ratio.

on diffs dating back into the 20's at least, the ring gear stamp has been a pretty friggin solid means of doing simple divisional math to determine the ratio of course you always count to double check

curious to know what chrysler all of a sudden started doing differently with their ring gear stamps

15 41 ~ 2.73
40 13's and 37 12's are 3.08's
11 39's or 39 11's are 3.55's
41 11's are 3.73's
9 37's or 37 9's are 4.11's
and I do believe a 41 10 is a 4.10

Aftermarket gears can be different and some OEM gears are different with there markings.Just don't hold your breath until you counted the teeth is all.

Somehow I knew Troy would be the first to answer. Thanks for the feedback and all the help you've given me and others over the years.

I double checked my (voice recorded) notes from when I did the uninstall. Turns out that the numbers were 41 11 which gives me the 3.73 after all... I guess I will have to swap out gears later on after all.

I tried the factory shims and it is too tight. I "tapped" the bearings on (gently) using a couple of wood blocks since I do not have a press. Should I take them to have them pressed on and recheck it before going any further? The stock shims appear to be 35 thou. But that is measuring with some cheap calipers. I'll buy some better ones if I can find them around.

I'm going to try tapping the bearings just a little more and see how tight that is when I get home tonight. I'll let everyon know how it works out.
