I am thinkin the DL in the rear for a good start. Did you install this yourself? Has anyone installed the detroit locker at home? How is that expeience?
no I didnt, to install one you have to know how to setup gears since this is a full carrier replacement unlike some of the others
one of those others is an aussie locker like i have... it is not a full carrier replacement. this means 3 things.
1. you can install it yourself.. it is very easy to put in.
2. it is much cheaper (it cost $300 from offroadlockers.com) .. plus saving on install
3. it is weaker since it is not a full carrier replacement.. however when was the last time you heard of someone breaking a rear carrier in a KJ?
the aussie works the same as a detroit locker.. and you will get clicking and the occasional 'CLACK!' from it.. for a min. you think your rear end fell on the ground but then you realize what's going on and it's natural. i find it does it after going around a moderately sharp to sharp corner without power (clutch in or shifting in the middle) then applying throttle (in next gear or just continuing with that one).. then it will do the loud noise.. that is a pretty rare occurrence but does happen. Also if you leave it in a gear and go around a pretty sharp corner it starts to 'hop'..since the 2 wheels are still locked since it's in gear and has power to the rear end.. when it starts to hop it can get violent pretty quick since the backlash compounds with every hop making the next one worse... easy solution.. push in the clutch. (this only happens while your still getting used to driving with it.. once you figure out what does what and when you need to coast or take a long shift you'll wonder how you lived without a locker for so long).
now that my book is done.. i went with a locker that is locked when power is to the wheels because i wanted to KNOW they were locked... not like ESP where you dont know which is turning.. i was afraid a DTT would be the same.. always wondering if you had them locked or if one would turn and not the other.
