I found a loose rubber hose in the top of the transmission tunnel by the Auto box bell housing. I cant find where it comes from or where it is suppose to be connected. The loose end has a White ball type flex joint male connection point. I know it should not be like that and would like to fix it but my wife is complaining that it might be something serious.
It is running from the rear towards the front.

I reached it coming in from the drivers side(RHD).

Any ideas?

I'm no expert, but I think it's the breather which I believe is supposed to be attached to the dipstick in some models.

I'm no expert, but I don't think it's supposed to smell funny. There are several breathers in the KJ.

Tranny
Rear Diff
Front Diff
some models have more

This was the thread on extending them - in case you find water to play in. (includes pictures)

I jacked her up yesterday and with my huge claws for hands traced it to be the Transfercase Breather. I took a length of hose and extended it towards the Airbox whilst I was busy. All I need to do is tie it down now as I didn't have any cable ties yesterday.

And only 3 more to go.

Pipe and Cable ties Compliments of my employer. They just know it yet.
