Any properly graded diesel synthetic oil will do. Far more important is how often you change the oil and filter, as these EGR diesels will wear faster if soot is allowed to build up in the oil. IMHO CRDs should have their oil changed every 5000km to ensure engine longevity.

I agree with you mate  no worries..

Oh boy....a good old fashioned oil debate.

I see these on motorcycle forums too.

My advice. Buy a name brand synthetic oil in the proper grade and change it every 5000 miles minimum.

Unless you are doing something extremely severe duty...then you're splitting hairs. The difference between oils is measured in PPM (parts per million)....yep...that's right. Read: "Pissing in the ocean". That's about how much difference it makes.

They're on every forum. Many can't stomach them. Best to stay out.

Yea, I've read Bob. What is happening here is that SOME are confusing what I said. I never called M1 a junk oil. I said """"""""inferior"""""""" which simply means 'not as good as' Shell. I go by ratings, that's what they are there for. To educate. I do think that today's M1 isn't the same oil that flew on the shuttle however. Perhaps a lessor distant cousin.

hehe i totally agree, and maybe take it a little farther to the conspiracy level!

unless they take it out of the back of my jeep and put it in whatever SuperDuper car/rocket/etc it's not the same!

I just wanted to give you a bit of an apology. I wasn't necessarily intending to pick on you. I've just seen other threads where the posters proclaim so and so oil is the worst ever or so and so oil is the best ever. Though I didn't do it very clearly, I was just trying to point out that for most of us who just put the stuff in our vehicles, we really can't make a definitive judgment whether X is any better than Y. Some people are very ardent about a particular brand and will purport that there are all kinds of fanciful benefits...and it just gets annoying.

Again, like you, I'm using the Shell because it's good stuff and it's cheaper than many other varieties out there. I was really looking forward to learning more about oils and lubricants at work so that I could share some of the learning on here. Unfortunately, I was assigned to a completely unrelated project in a different group, so now I'll be learning all about paper treatments.

No apology needed. Truckers have been using Shell for decades. The stuff works at a fair price.

I have used Mobil 1 5W40, then switched to Shell Rotella T 5W40, and now I'm using Schaeffer's Lubricants Supreme 9000 5W40. Must say I like Schaeffer's the best. Better oil and a much better price.
