Post subject: Making my KJ sound more aggresive
PostPosted: Tue Apr 21, 2009 1:19 am
Hi all. I've been wanting to make my liberty sound more aggresive but am working on a small budget. Originally I thought installing a COI would do the trick, but Ive been reading mixed reviews on here and thought I'd explore other alternatives.

Is there anything basic that can be done to the KJ to give it a more agressive growl? I heard that removing the air filter box lid makes it more loud, but that seems like it could be bad for dust and debris.

Sorry for the noob question, any help would be appreciated!

Check out a few posts below at throwing a muffler on. I did what a few have done on here, just get a turn down and let the muffler dump straight down.

I had the airbox out once and a cone filter in, and it wasn't loud at all. Don't know why, it was the same one that was in my last car...and it was LOUD with it in their.

Actually here's what it sounded like! Can hear the real deep grunt.

http://videos.streetfire.net/video/inta ... _48323.htm

I haven't tried cone/exhaust to see what if theirs any difference yet tho.

That goosing of the throttle sounds like crap to me... kind of like a leaf blower or chainsaw or a 2 stroke dirt bike with a loose exhaust...
Why bother...

I had a super 40 on mine for a while and it had a cheap sound as well. Unless its a deep growl dont bother cause it just makes you look dumb... or like your in a tiny honda... which is the same thing i think.

I've been arguing this point for a year...if it isn't a V8, leave it stock because it sounds like a weedwacker.

Yea, my 50series sounds pretty good. In the higher rpms you loose that low growl but anything under 3k sounds great.

Yep my MagnaFlow Ultra Race muffler make my KJ sound very good,no where near the sound of those angry weedeaters. It's not the full sound of a V-8 but it's close.

I Think that I am going to be purchasing a Flowmaster Super 44, but not sure if I am going to get the diamond plate or not because some have said that the diamond plating reduces the sound...

I went with the Flowmaster 44OR for protection more than I did sound. Once I get around to installing it, I'll let you know what I think of the sound.

You want agressive? Then run open headers on that 3.7

Can't say anything about the MagnaFlow cat-back but I did once have the Borla Dual cat-back,it sounded good with a very low grumble at idle that got better with more RPM's but it is nothing compared to my MagnaFlow Ultra Race muffler alone.

So does anyone know if the diamond plating reduces noise?

Why would it since the diamond pattern is only on the outside.Wouldn't matter anyway it will crush the same as any muffler.

My liberty has dauls run from the back of the great big muffler which I assume is stock( after looking at pictures from another post my muffler is that thrust turbo) with borla tips welded on the ends. It is not loud but has a good deep sound that you can hear sitting inside the vehicle. It isn't loud enough to drain out the radio. I guess I am getting old ,but I think it sounds just right. In my younger years I had a 69 ford short wheelbase sport truck that i put a build 390 in. I ran headers , header glass packs and straight exhaust. You talk about loud. I had to leave for work at 3:00 am and the neighbor kept calling the police on me. I had to push it out of the drive and cost down my street a ways before I'd fire her up. Then I'd idle till I got on the interstate. When I would get to work the guys always told me they could hear me coming down the interstate. It didn't do any good to turn on the radio because you couldn't hear it and you couldn't carry a conversation without yelling. Back then I thought it was the greatest thing. But now It would just cause a head ache. Heck I think the jump that the cam gave would stop my heart from beating now. It was fun back then though. If you want loud get a v8..................I remember when you could flip the breather cover over on the carb. filter housing for more sound.

ive been doing some researching and im still stuck on this too but this is right off of summit and it doesnt say anything about the noise reduction with the regular super 44

Flowmaster mufflers--as trail-tough as your rig!
Flowmaster Extreme Off-Road series mufflers can handle just about anything you can serve up. These super-tough, off-road mufflers are constructed of 14-gauge diamond plate steel. Flowmaster Extreme Off-Road mufflers offer 10 times the crush strength of standard OE-style mufflers, and, best of all, they are made in the USA. Flowmaster Off-Road series mufflers feature Flowmaster's patented Delta Flow chamber technology; by precisely placing three internal baffles in the case, and welding them to exacting specifications, Flowmaster's new Extreme Off-Road series Delta Flow mufflers go a step beyond their original 40 series mufflers. These mufflers not only out-scavenge the originals, but they also provide superior reductions in exterior sound levels and resonance, which are transmitted through the exhaust system and into the vehicle. You get all of this, plus improved torque and horsepower, and that famous Flowmaster sound!
