I was out on a dirt road last Saturday, had to back up on an incline and had a little slippage. Popped the 2005 KJ into 4HI, backed up, put it in Drive, and took it out of 4HI. Noticed the "Part Time" light on the dash was still on. Pulled the handle back into 4HI, and the light goes out! Put it back down, and it goes back on. It's been like this for two days now, what's the problem?

It's called the Transfer Case Position Sensor. It's just a light really, no harm in letting it go if you don't wanna fix it right away that I know of. Mine has been doing that for a while now.

Mine too. It actually went off and now only goes off when I bump the handle for 4wd. I'll replace the part eventually. There's some good info in the FAQ section about it. Price, picture, etc.

it is actually a new feature in the KJ, it is an economic job outlook indicator... only part-time jobs are available at this time...

Yeah its the sensor. Had mine go out. Went a couple years with no noticed side effects. I finally decided to replace it ($75 part, ouch). Was pretty simple, unplug harness, unscrew it from Tcase, thread new sensor it and reconnect plug. Probably a 10 min job if you remember to bring a pair of channel locks/ proper size wrench with you. The angle to get at it is a bit awkward, but manageable. Hope that helps too.

hehe yeap sensor issue. My sensor went out about 2 years ago as I was driving a bit on the fast side down a speed bumped road. It was fun but I got the light on. I called around and the part was 75 then but when I took my KJ in for some work they said it was now 100. I told them were to go and about 2 months later the light works fine again, lmao. I just ignored it. :)

Thanks for everyone's input! :D I tried exercising it, by going to 4LO and back again a couple of times, to no avail. The light started flashing for a bit, went out for a couple of miles, then came back on solid when in 2HI. I'm just going to put a piece of black tape on the dash to hide the light, don't have $75 to spare to fix a stupid light right now.

Is the thing cleanable, or is it a solid unit? I was wondering if I took it out and cleaned it with solvent, that it might start working again?
