I used to have a cherokee 4.0 and the oil filter in it was easily accessible, i had a hard time finding the one in my 08 KK(It was getting dark too). To those of you who change your own oil how do access it and do you get it out with a wrench?

It's on the front of the engine ... It's really up in there. You will need to get on your back and stick your hand up. You won't be able to fit a wrench in there (at least I couldn't get one in there). It's going to be hard to get off on your back (hard to get good leverage). If you can get it on a lift it would make it a little easier. If you look up with a flash light you should be able to see a little of the filter. If you have skid plates I found it "a little" easier to do it with the engine plate off. It can be done with the plate on ...
It's a real pain in @$$ ... I just take it to a local shop to get it done.

It's between the ps rack and front diff. I use a K&N oil filter because it had a 1 inch nut welded to the end which makes removal way easier... But it is still a pain in the rear

Removal is not that bad, I use a end cap wrench and a long wobble extension, go right in the front. . Pretty much a straight shot to spin off just have to stick your hand in to catch the filter.

Sound like a remote filter kit would be helpful here.

You could also add on double filters and another oil cooler...

If it is in the same spot as the KJ, its not that bad. Of course it is easier if you have a lift and missing a front bumper like me!
