hi there
have noticed lately, that when taking off,its more smokie ,when changing gears or picking up speed ,has had regular services,on second timing belt change, has 150,000 miles on clock, has a 2.5 vmi engine, not buring oil, only black smoke
was suggested could be injectors need cleaning,
any ideas

Although your engine has a different style of EGR system as compared to the later vehicles (05+), i would venture a guess that the EGR valve is stuck open somewhat. I would pull it off (on top of the exhaust manifold) and inspect for cleanliness.

from there I would verify the condition of the boost pressure sensor in the intake manifold and make sure the air cleaner is not dirty. Beyond that, I wouldn't necessarily worry about it too much.

The EGR valve is on top of the exhaust manifold. Connected to the valve is the cooler and then a pipe that goes around the back of the engine and the pipe's silver in color. The valve is held on to the manifold with two bolts, and then i think there are two bolts that hold the cooler to the valve. The gasket should be steel so it's reusable.

For your engine application, smoke limitation fuel quantity is controlled by boost pressure since you don't have a mass air flow sensor, hence my guess as to either sticking EGR or bad boost sensor. Of course it might be the injectors, but that's costly to have rebuilt or replaced, so might as well chase the more affordable solution first.

Cheers
