I just got a 2.5 inch Daystar lift. Discount Tire put 265/75/16's on my KJ CRD, however, I can't use them as of yet. Reason is that I would lose my turning radius. Now, I understand that part of the lower gray cladding infront of the front tire has to be trimmed. However, the problem is just behind the front tire. There is a small bump (hump) of gray cladding that has metal behind it. I think it's part of the metal rail (lip) that runs under the doors (frame)? I'm pretty sure If that can be trimmed or "Fixed," then I can easily fit the 265/75/16's with no problem or lose of turning radius and no rubbing. I'll take a picture of the bump I'm talking about as soon as I get home if that will help at all. I'd really like to get the bigger tires. I just put on 255/70/16's and have 30 days if I want to change my mind. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Cut the plastic away and then bend the pinch weld toward the inside, flattening it w/ a BFH. Don't be surprised if you still need some more trimming though w/ those 265's. Possibly in the back to if you plan on stuffing those tires any.

Yep. Have to cut away the plastic and pound down the pinch weld behind it. Can use dremel, tin snips, or whatever else to cut away the plastic. Get a BFH to knock down the pinch weld.

Don't cut the pinch weld off unless you know something about unibody design and welding.

The paint will chip away from the pinch weld so you want to coat this with some kind of anti-rust coating. Then you can melt the plastic and flatten it out and glue it back over were it was cut out.

Don't know if you're using new rims or spacers. If not you'll have to watch the inside of the tires at the upper a-arm. At drop the a-arm can rub on the tire and cut it up pretty bad.

If you do change the wheel backspace then the rub will get worse at the outside edge of the tire. you'll probabaly have to cut away more of the bumper.

SO, in other words, not a good idea right? For the wifes daily driver anyway. I don't want to spend more money on spacers, ect..... 255/70/16 is the biggest I'm going to go with this lift right? I want mean, aggressive tires that look the part and can act the part as well.

Would this problem exist with the narrower 235/85r16 tires? (1/10 larger diamater, but fairly narrower)

the 245 75 16 seems to be the best fit over all. Not a real rubbing issue and works great for all KJs. Hope that helps.

A couple of guys on here run the 235/85's. At least one runs the trxus m/t, which is a very aggresive tread. I think the have posted about how well that size works with the 2.5" lift, but it was on the other site...

Depends on the tire. AT's -- prolly not much. With my BFG MT's, there's a LOTS of rubbing. I lost about 20% of my turn radius.

45 Min of trimming and they will fit just fine. I am not sure on the CRD since it is heavier.

It is my wifes daily driver. She only gets rub at full lock in reverse mostly (since the nose dives in reverse)

I will post pics of the trimming It's Easy.

I have had them stuffed out in Moab and havent had a Rivet pop yet...

The 255/70/16's havn't been any trouble for anyone right? I'm not goin to go cutting anything. I'll just stick with this size for now I think. It didn't seem to rub any. Who else is running the 255/70/16? In everyones thoughts, what would be better as far as traction and looks, the 255/70/16, or the 245/75/16? I don't want rubbing. I can't thank everyone in here enough for your thoughts so far. I just want to do this right the first time with no regrets.

Code:

lt245/75r16   30.4 x 9.64

lt255/70r16   30.0 x 10.0

Well as the 255 are wider, they would in theory be better for mud, sand and rocks (more contact patch)

The 245 are narrower so they would in theory work better for winter weather (cuts into snow and sleet better)

But they are so close, you most likely wouldn't notice the difference. I personally prefer the tall & skinny look, which is why I am considering the 235/85 after I get my lift sorted out. I am sure you'll be happy with both.

ALso consider the price difference. Sometimes, one oddball size can be insanely higher or cheaper than the rest for a given tire. The 235/85 also seem to run less expensive, due to the narrower tread width.

Thanks for clarifying that for me. Thats why this site is so darn awsome. I have found out more about the Liberty from this site than anywhere else.

I got BFG AT KO 245/75/16 installed, along with the Daystar kit. Everything is just awesome, and no rubbing at all. Ypu can see some pictures in my website below.

Here are my pics of me trimming the inner fender wells and hammering the pinch weld down.

longarm, I'm running LT255/70/R16 BFG AT's (also purchased from Discount Tire) on a stock (pre-lowered) '02 Limited with only a slight rub in full turn. FWIW, Discount suggests 35psi. I found that 40psi improves my gas milage and I get even wear. After two (scheduled) rotations, I cannot detect any wear yet. (if that makes sense).
