Howdy - so - was a little tired leaving for work this morning... Got to the bottom of the hill and forgot to turn off the 4x4. Most of the driving is on the highway and then it gets twisty over loveland pass, but twisty in both directions... Never felt any binding until I go to pull into a parking spot. I'm pretty sure I'm not allowed to post what I said when I saw I was still in 4wd.

So, I know I haven't broken anything yet... But what the first thing that's going to wear out from the damage I did this morning?

my brother did that in his dodge dakota for 25 miles at speeds around 65mph.
all he did was change his fluid and it was fine!

Part time or full-time?? You should never drive on blacktop with part time engaged. Fulltime is okay. Pretty easy to change the fluid and costs about $5/qt. Need 2 qts and about 10-15 minutes.

Maybe me figuring on breaking something would idicate we're talking about part-time 4x4. And me being pissed off at myself about it might indicate taht I know not to drive on pavement with it on.

The fluid is brandy new... Guess I'll be changing it anyway.

May have contributed to some extra wear... nothing that can't be replaced... but then you know having a Jeep is a money-sucking thing anyway, right?

If nothing is broke then theres nothing you can do. Changing the fluid in the tcase is a good idea..

putting new fluid in isn't going to do anything except waste fluid.

Most likely, the chain got stretched a bit. If it didn't go BOOM, no biggie

If nothing broke then theres nothing you can do.

Don't bother replacing the fluid.

Thanks for all the replies everybody... I guess I will not set about changing the fluid and will just let it go for now... I'm thinking about going across the street where there is a big empty dirt/sand parking lot and driving around in 4wd just to release any tension in the dif... Although I didn't get any argument taking into or out of 4wd this morning after realizing what a ^@#$%# bonehead I am. Dunno - still kicking myself. Stupid...

If it makes you feel any better i did that once last summer. Haven't had any issues, cross fingers.

Now, did i have to replace that front DS before or after? :?:

No real reason to. As long as it's in 2wd now, any binding that HAD built up is now gone.

ThunderbirdJunkie did the same thing to his dad one time. Backed his truck up a hill, and with the crappy OEM stock tires, it needed to be in 4wd. Put it in 4hi...next morning, his dad went to the store and called

"Why would my truck not want to turn?"
"Are you in 4wd?" "I shouldn't be" "you probably are" "Why would I be?" "'cuz I put it there"

"d'oh!"

No worries. I did that once too...maybe twice  all good no problems to report. Just take a deep breath and think to yourself way to go dip :) We all do things like this form time to time.

friend did that mess with his wrangler while i was riding with him, it started popping and bucking and i took the liberty of pullin his gear shifter out of gear and smackin the 4wd stick and then slugged him in the shoulder

come to think of it he's got a habit of doin that too, i'd bet his chain's basically laying across the gears in his Tx Case

come to think of it.. he's got a habit of forgetting to pull it into 4h too

he got stuck almost immediately after getting on the beach (like 4 feet onto the beach.. ) at carolina beach memorial day weekend

anyway, do you change your Tx Case juice every now and then? Mine was black as tar last time i changed it, i'm guessing that the PO had never had it changed so it had about 80k on it. I've heard that the AWD Tx Cases turn their fluid black within 30k miles - it kind of worried me, i dont have any leaking seals to suck in dirt, but i gave it a good flush (changed the fluid, ran it for a few hundred miles) drained it and refilled it

but i'll have to agree with tbj, theres no reason to change the fluid after what happened, chances are other than some increased wear, if you didn't break anything in the process you'll probably be alright, our stuff can take a bit of abuse before grenading thankfully

kind of like the one time i forgot to put in oil after an oil change on my moms car.. it's one of those things that reminds you for years of what not to do!
