So I got my roof rack this morning and found rust coming out from under the plastic under my roof rails. Would linex be a way to prevent this? Has anyone with a silver kj done this? And idea what I would expect for cost?

You would have to get rid of the rust first... I'm not sure Line-X would be the best for your situation... Just my 2 cents....

Once the rust is gone.... would linex prevent future rust as well as protecting from dents. Is line only aviable in black?

Yes, but are talking about Line-Xing your entire roof... or under your roof rails where the rust is coming from... :? You wouldn't want to line-x the spots where the rails mount to the KJ because they wouldn't fit properly...

Yes line-x can color match....

There's stuff you can use over rust that isn't as thick as Line-X... POR-15 I think?

Bedlined the roof of my silver sport about 10 months ago. I used the same Plasticote bedliner that I used on the beltline down. Runs about 50 bucks plus the cost of sandpaper, xylene, and a roller. Looks great IMO.

Just out of curiosity... how durable is that brand? (in other words...what would it take to scrape it off?)

Big boulder in Moab didn't scrape it off, just took some of the shine off. But that was an easy fix, just rolled another coat over that area. So it holds up pretty darn well IMO.

I love the two tone look, someday I'll get the guts to do this to mine.

POR 15 would be great for down in the grooves around the feet of the rack, and the rest of the rust; just sand, wire brush all rust off, then xylene then paint. Then you could mount the rack and do the top in bedliner. I would worry about rust growing under the rubberized liner (whatever brand) if it was just applied over rust spots.

Not to hijack, but how is that plasticote holding up to UV?

I did the bottom half, bumpers and fenders in march of 08, and it still looks like the day I rolled it on. The roof went on in July or August of 08, it also looks brand new.

Inc has also used this brand, maybe he will chime in with his results. I know it still looks good in the pics.

Since I'm going to Line-X the roof and the rails are going over the rust spots, do I need to be overly concerned with paint? Will it be much work to remove everything to do this the right way? Also, what exactly is xylene? I'm not going to be getting the liner on top of rust, I definitely want to get rid of that first.

Simple answer it's a paint thinner and it's used to prep parts for painting to ensure they are clean.

Easiest way is like posted above. Remove your rails, sand down any rust to bare metal, hit it with xylene and prime those areas. The rest of the roof just rough up the paint and roll on the bedliner/pay linex to spray. Note on the POR-15 - Works great, but can be expensive.

If I used POR-15 would I have to use that xylene stuff? Looking for prices of POR-15 it doesn't look "too" bad for small amounts, and I'm hoping that is all I need.

If you are going to do the bedlining yourself yes. If you take it to linex then no they will do all the prep work prior to spraying it. Probably about 4-500 bucks to have the roof done.

So they would sand the rust and everything? Though that sounds great.... I'm thinking $4-500 bucks is a bit rich for my blood lol. If I was to rool it on, would I just have to tape off the body and glass near the roof with painters take and newspaper or something like that?

Yep. If it does get on the glass, it will come right off with a razor blade though. Paint knot so easily...
