In previous threads about spark plugs, it was said that platinum/iridium spark plugs require a plastic/composite spark plug gap tool so not to damage the plug. I've searched several tool websites, I have not found such tool. Anyone have a link?

I've been using a regular metal spark plug wheel on my all my platinum spark plugs.

I believe I just bought a spark plug gap tool from Schucks which had a plastic adjustment. I'm guessing more and more gappers will come with plastic automatically so you can adjust any spark plug since the platinums have become popular.

You don't need a special gap tool.

Most plugs are preset at the factory and shouldn't need to be adjusted. The nature of Iridium spark plugs means that they are able to utilize a larger gap setting while actually requiring less voltage and straining the ignition system less. If you *have* to regap Iridium spark plugs (e.g if misfire occurs due to gap being too large) then do so with extreme care. Just do not use a slide type gapping tool or put pressure on the brittle center electrode in any way as it may become damaged.

To open the gap, carefully use a pair of fine nosed pliers to bend the ground electrode outwards, away from the center electrode. Take care not to contact the porcelain insulator or the center electrode as they can be easily damaged. Use a feeler gauge to check for the correct gap size - it should be a light sliding fit. To close the gap, tap the ground electrode gently on a hard surface and then open the gap to the required setting using the method described above.

I bought platinum plugs, not iridium. Is it okay to use this type of gapper:

no use plastic or composite

only reason why the plastic gappers haven't become more common is because they don't last as long as the metal ones, eventually with standard type plugs the plastic gets chewed
