the bearing noise i was hearing that i thought was coming from my ac compressor apparently was coming from the tensioner pully. i guess the bearings went bad and got the bolt hot because it melted that sucker clean off while i was driving. 45 minutes from a service station. they are replacing it for around $80. has this happened to anyone else??

My idle arm pulley (the one just to the right of the tensioner) went out on my way back from Vegas while I was towing a CJ home. Out in the middle of nowhere, bearings froze up and the pulley melted. Serpentine belt came off and I was done. Found someone to tow me (and the rig I was towing) to the next town where I met a friend of mine with the part. $17 part and put it on in 5 mins. No warning at all, no squealing or anything.

were you only noticing the noise when the ac was on? I just started getting a noise yesterday afternoon when turning on the ac but not had a chance to figure out the cause. i have a new idler/tensioner installed a few months back so hope it isn't that.

Man Matt, you've had the worse luck with that thing. My Tahoe had tensioner replaced @ around 80k from PO.

That was how the 2nd failed OEM tensioner on mine started, noise only when A/C compressor was running,it was less then 6 months old also. It's not the bearings going it's the internal coil spring is cracked or broken.

i drove almost an hour with the belt loose and i messed up another pulley and the belt got messed up. my $80 fix turned in to $190 reallly fast.

A SIDE NOTE here: i saw a fu**** accident today. head on at 50. 2 cars not 10 feet from the front of me. i was the only one to get out to help them. i dont even live here. i helped the guy first. we had to kick his door to get him out. the girl's driver door wouldnt open so i helped her out through the passengers side. she had a cut on her arm. made sure they were ok and the cops were coming then i left. now im kind of paranoid when im driving. i will probably have a crash nightmare tonight....
