The Livingston run has had me thinking about emergency procedures and preparedness for trail runs. While it's impossible to plan for or anticipate every situation I'd like to open a dialog to collect ideas on this topic. One suggestion that comes to my mind is that we should have at least one person on each run that has gone through CPR training and that person should be named during the driver's meeting.

Hey Matt, I am First Aid and CPR trained! But I guess that wouldn't have helped me any  I am sure that a lot of good is going to come out of my accident. I was looking into mobile cell phone signal boosters. This is a device that you can mount in your Jeep and amplifies your cell phone signal both on transmit and receive so that you can get better range. It is used with an external antenna which boosts the signal also. These are legal and don't require a license, like the ham radio stuff I carry. The drawback is cost. They start around $300. I will get one for my replacement Jeep, I think, and see how well it works. One of the off road magazines tried one in an FJ Cruiser. And, yes, they declared my Liberty "totaled" today.

Hey, what do they want for buyback for your KJ?

Just curious.

ThunderbirdJunkie has considered recently getting his ham license.

I would agree, I was on the livingston trip and I am a former EMT/FIREFIGHTER for nine years in Houston, The people that were on the trip suggested we go as far as knowing where the closest hopsital is, having a cell phone list of everyone on the ride, having a designated medical person/emergency coordinator.

I agree, If I didn't have mitch's GPS with direction's to the hospital, I would have had a serious prob. finding help !! We need a list of every one's cell phone and emergency phone number's and give everyone a copy before we start wheeling on each trip . I didn't have phone numbers when Jim was at the hospital and had to wait for people to call the hospital or eventully my cell phone !!!

Since our President and Vice President are MIA

I decided to make this: 8)

Once we edit: based on what you guys want... I'll print a bunch of copies off so we can have these for each trail run....

another great saftey communicator to consider is the 'spot messenger'. Alot of people on expeditionportal use these. they are especially useful for when you're out on your own from what i hear. but yeah, its a satellite messenger that you can send short messages to a website that loved ones etc can check and will get emergency messages from. it also enables you to request emergency services without having to use a cell phone.

ummm, IMHO we need to make sure that we have a liability release for everyone on a run. The other stuff would be nice, but if no CPR certified members are on the list, do we cancel a run? That would be about as bad as when Mid-West wanted to have an officer at every run. About all you can do is have a list of name/handle/cell#/land# that the officers keep and PM to Ohio members.

I have to agree with Moose, although we need info at times going overboard can be worse than no info.

I think
A. a Liability Release form would be great
B. all members/non members on the run give who ever the coordinator for the run is contact info to include emergency contact information and cell phone numbers.
C. Would be good to have emergency contact information for the areas we go to. Could get this info together for the most used and have it ready to print off for whatever run.
D. Still would like to see a safety list that everyone agrees to have in his or her vehicle, (i.e.) tow point/straps, etc.

Think it over and let the dicussions begin

It's called the Good Samaritan Law.... All you have to do is ask if it is okay to help the person...

Good Samaritan laws in the United States are laws or acts protecting from liability those who choose to aid others who are injured or ill. They are intended to reduce bystanders' hesitation to assist, for fear of being sued or prosecuted for unintentional injury or wrongful death. Similarly, in Canada, a good Samaritan doctrine is a legal principle that prevents a rescuer who has voluntarily helped a victim in distress from being successfully sued for 'wrongdoing'. Its purpose is to keep people from being reluctant to help a stranger in need for fear of legal repercussions if they were to make some mistake in treatment.[1] Good Samaritan laws vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, as will their interactions with various other legal principles, such as consent, parental rights and the right to refuse treatment. Such laws generally do not apply to medical professionals' or career emergency responders' on-the-job conduct, but some extend protection to professional rescuers when they are acting in a volunteer capacity.

Wasn't even thinking about helping another person Chris, more along the lines that if you are on the run you are going on your own free will and if you roll or tear out the front diff that person can not sue anyone on the run or LOST Ohio.

Had it happen to me a few years back, was spotting on a run , told the guy right where to put his right front tire, he went where he wanted and rolled over on the drivers side, then 3 months later I am called into court being being sued due to him rolling his Toyota PU, jerk. It was thrown out but cost me three days work. Two weeks later he wanted to come on a run with us, my response was.........................a polite (sort of) NO

oh ok.... I mentioned the Good Samaritan law because moose stated
"The other stuff would be nice, but if no CPR certified members are on the list, do we cancel a run?"

So we should come up with a Vehicle Liability sheet also???

Dang... We might be like an OFFICIAL Club!!!!

Hey Mudd, I can agree with you on the liability waiver, kinda surpised it hasn't been mentioned before, most of the off road events and parks I have been to require you to sign a waiver...

I do however think that having a 1st aid/cpr qualified person on each run would behoove everyone on the ride, due to the fact that some of the places we go are in very remote areas, and emergency repsonse from the professionals may be delayed due to communications, terrain, and other considerations...I am spekaing from expierience, was a professional firefighter and EMT in Houston for 9 years, and we had to do a few off road rescues... time to get to the patient was the biggest factor

towstrap and I have been comteplating taking an advanced 1st aid class and advanced CPR class, my EMT cert expired in 1997, so needless to say I need a refresher
