In the past year, I've done mudding, some technical rock style driving, and general off road / fire road / whatever driving. I've come to the conclusion that I love the most, the random stuff. Looking at a map, turning down a dirt road, and being able to go through (to a extent) no matter how bad it gets. The other month on a road trip I found a dirt road that cut straight through the province. In a actually populated area, the street I was a very bad mud road, deep ruts, and lots of soft spots for me to through some mud (accidentally lol). No way in hell a car could get through this at all, it would be stuck in the ruts. This wasn't hard core off roading, but, it was my style. I know on here, everyone has tastes, and I'm curious if there are many people like me, that enjoy the ability to go anywhere, for a road trip, or just to find a cool campsite. I love the other styles, but for whatever reason, not as much.

I agree... I rather 4wheel to get some where than just for fun. I get fun from the ability to take those untraveled roads others dont get to experience. I also tend to like a mix of things not just rock or mud. I would prefer to have a little bit of everything.

I love the random road trips that end up being covered in dirt/mud, and not just because we hit that big mud bog, but because we took that "right" turn down that old road, and it got a bit messy. The journey is really only half the fun for me :)

I enjoy the 'everything trails' but I would have to say that I prefer the ones in the Rockies though. I really don't like mud. I have a dream of traveling down the Rockies from the Canadian border to New Mexico hitting as few paved roads as possible.

Should of been with me in Tanzania. In 28 days I saw rain twice, but while in Moshi, near Mount Kilimanjaro it rained all night, the regular roads that everyone has to drive on turned into more hard core wheeling than what most see here after a whole week of off roading.
I was driving a Land Rover and had the frame /diffs dragging in spots and people in Toyota Camrys were still trying and sometimes getting through the same spots.
What some of us call off roading is normal everyday getting to town 25 miles away.

and
"Its the journey, not the destination"

I think you're on to something here. My entire reasoning for having Jeeps is the ability to go down those roads, some of which are little more than wide ruts, with washed-out bridges, etc.
I'm not particularly interested in running hi-speed through a mud pit so I can beat the fastest time. And crawling 'established' trails is interesting, but lacks the sense of adventure that I enjoy the most. What good is it going up a hill that 87 Jeepers just went over? (aside from catching up to the beer cooler, of course)
Timber roads and forest access roads offer a chance to see a piece of the countryside that almost no one sees, and you may encounter anything from mud to rocks to water crossings. Here in the Northeast, there are lots of seasonal roads (not maintained in the Winter) that can be a challenge in their own right. I have made the trek across the backside of Jefferson Notch Road during the winter. Not impassable, but certainly an adventure!

Did you see the post about the guy going border to border (South to North) on dirt only? I would love doing that!

I tried the mud bog once. It was fun but got boring real fast. Off road parks are better but then they get repetitive sooner or later. I like trails that are long and have many different challenges to get through, mud, streams, rocks, hills, downed trees etc. Good scenery helps too.

I dig the rough trails that I can take to see some place that most don't get to see. I like to camp along that trail some where. I really don't like mud....I just hate getting stuck and sunk up to the bottom of the Jeep....no fun when two of your friends get stuck trying to pull you out either. Good stories though!

The only part about mud I like is having it fly everywhere and cover my jeep.... though getting stuck sucks, cleaning it sucks, listening to the wife and friends/family who ride in it as a daily driver whine about how dirty sucks lol. So maybe it would be easier to get the jeep painted brown haha

I like the way this guy thinks. I like to actually get somewhere when I am going off road. And know that most ppl rather opt to drive lil front wheel drive cars and never have the oppurtunity to get where I go in my jeep. Half the time it will be to a lake to go fishin or just a nice trail with a great view, over a pass or to a camping spot where I know there isnt gonna be ole Ranger Rick breathing over my shoulder if I decide to turn up some Garth :D after hours and maybe do a lil target practice as well. I do clean up after myself and still take very good precautions while shootin(dont criticize me please). I love just wingin it!!! Thank the lord for those who love the great outdoors. YeeHaw

I couldnt resist. Just my style :P
