I remember a fellow I knew who routinely lifted the front of his cars with a block & tackle to a roof joist in his garage before crawling under it
Scary Huh?

My advice, simply listen to that little voice in the back of your head. It's usually right. Oh, and save the beer for after the job is done. It's not called "liquid stupid" for nothing

yes, exactly. jack a side and put in the stand then go jack the other side. some guys will jack on the front skid plate and do both stands at the same time but you already saw what happens if you get the jack too high and the pressure point angles get too steep.

So is there any problem with only using a jack stand1 on each side (ie jacking up the front only) or will this cause suspension damage?

you should be fine, just make sure to chock the back wheels to keep it from moving any. Also, don't go too high! you don't need to extend the stands all the way out to get under there for an oil change!
