so when would you run part time? trails? mud?that's 4 lo time. not rain or snow on highway but what about around town in the snow?

The only time I've ever used 4-Lo is on difficult obstacles. You aren't going to run many trails or mud pits in low gear creeping at 5 mph... On the 242 swap, I just don't see the need for the full time. I live in the PNW, home of the never ending rain storm, less than 30 miles from Mount Baker which gets the most snowfall any place in the lower 48. I've never even felt that I needed FT 4wd. I've only needed 4-Hi when starting from a dead stop, then it's right back to 2-Hi... Nary an issue.

i wanted the FT for the long highway trips in the winter. when a 7 hr drive turns into a 10 hr nightmare due to snow and ice, it is much less stressful if you don't have to worry about shifting in and out of PT depending on how clear the road is. i had the FT in my Grand Cherokee and it was one of the things i missed the most.

your situation is different with the rain as well. with that much rain, the less junk builds up on the road surface. other places where it doesn't rain as much, you get oil based products and rubber that build up on the road. no matter how good your tires are, all it takes is a little bit of water to turn the road into a ice skating rink. for those of us that run mud tires and keep them aired up so they wear evenly and to keep them quiet, it gets real hairy, real quick.

I'm with daspes on that one, only time I use 4-Lo is when crawling rocks or similar

i've used it on the beach once or twice to increase throttle control because of some really violent left-to-rights, whooptydoops or whatever ya call it

other than that i've not used any other than 4-hi, stripped back to 1st gear it routinely idles down the beach in moderately soft sand

I DO however.. wish the 231 was more 'inexperienced' friendly - my only worry is my gf is going to 'borrow' it for work in snow and drive it down a dry highway and blow the chain off the transfer case or worse

i'm sure her excuse would be either

OMGZ Sorry i was late for work, or 'i didn't even use it'

:P
