Would be nice to have , but can you justify the cost of owning one of the more expensive units just to use maybe once or twice per year?

For the price, you could probably have a brake specialist look at your car maybe 10 times.
If you had to see a brake specialist that many times, you would have probably crashed with such faulty brakes that the vehicle would have been disposed of.

I just had the Liberty into the dealer for free PA state inspection and to read the ABS codes as well. They use a DRBIII tool with a vehicle modle specific memory card to read the codes I beleive .

Thought for sure I was going to hear it was a front wheel speed sensor due to the rusted nature of the hub. Well they said they could not communicate with the Anti Lock Brake Control Module. They reset the main connector to the ABM and the light went out only to re-appear when they drove it. They said it would be around $425 for a new ABM that they beleive included the pump. I told them I'd look into it further. I wonder if I took it out when I accidently set a wrench down on the battery and it shorted across the terminals for a split second?

Ebay had a few DRBIII tools going for several thousand dollars, so I think I'll hunt for a used '05 ABS module. Any one know if the are year specific or engine specific. We have an '05 CRD and it appears to be an Ate brand controller not the Teves mark25? shown in the shop manual I have.

Shorting out the battery will not fry just one electronic controller,it will take almost all of them out but most likely nothing will happen. If they can not communicate with the ABM and if they did the correct diagnostic path and came to the conclusion the ABM is bad then yes you will need a new one and it will need to be programmed to your vehicle,a used one will not work if you have a sentry key and not to mention the DRBIII will be needed to bleed the ABS pump anyways(a must, you will never get the ABS pump bleed without the DRBIII).You can find DRBIII's for sale but you will be very limited without access to Chrysler's website, just basically a very expensive code puller all it will be and only for Chrysler vehicles('09+ need the Starscan).

Understood about the DRBIII bleed process. Can the brakes be converted to non-ABS without throwing any codes? I know that sounds pretty stupid but now I feel pretty lame for getting ABS...I saw that the control module is physically coupled to the pump with a whole bunch of O-rings. Probably the reason why they sell the pump and control module together. I guess we're tethered to the dealer in more ways than one.

Sorry but the answer is no,it is safe to do though(if done correctly) but the ABS light will always be illuminated.

Any one removed or disabled the SMD (surface mount device) LED light for that or other idiot lights on their dash panel ?

Ahh yes... remember when you could just pull the bulb  What scan tool. We don't need no stinking scan tools.

When a problem is detected with the ABS the ABS light will illuminate and the ABS will be disabled, so there's the factory ABS override. Not sure about the plumbing of it all. Our wierd problem was that with the ABS light on the pump would still activate and give you the ABS shudder we're all used to when ABS activates. I pulled the ABS Pump fuse and the braking action returned to normal all be it with the ABS and brake light on. I'm assuming that the brake light is on whenever the ECM doesn't see the ABM (in our case of dealer verified non-communication with the DRBIII ) and I really want to keep that Brake light functional rather than blanked out. Maybe the ABM can still communicate with the ECM and not the DRBIII ?

I know, I know...just bite the bullet and get the new ABM installed. The dealer visit with the DRBIII seems to be the way to go. Wonder what the chances of an independent shop having a DRBIII with the Liberty chip set in the S.E. PA area such Jeepin By Al, All J's or Jeff Daniels?

The only way to load the correct programs into the DRBIII(they erase themselfs after being used) you need access to Chrysler's website which independent shops can not have since they are not a approved service dealer(they would have to buy a franchise). The only way to get it programmed is the dealership,no way around it.
