I've had my ABS light on since they installed my new DTT in the front, I think they may have buggered one of the front hub sensors???

But, I finally got the KJ back Friday Morning from installing the DTT in the rear.... Wont go into it but it involved frantic seach Australia wide for Crown bolts......

So after cancelling Caths Birthday trip to Straddie, we settled for a Long weeked at Springbrook..So I pick up the car Friday Morning, Do my own wheel alignment..... then on the way home, engine check light comes on!!!!!! So check code p0038, o2 sensor, so no worries, lets keep going, halfway down the coast, brake light comes on.....OK, lets have a look, brake fluid looked low, so topped it up, light went out, right, lets keep going... 15 mins down the road, brake light comes back on....Hnmmmmmmm... then, the speedo starts to drop and says 30km, (were doing 110km) slowly to drops to zero... Right, we stop, I check the rear diff sensor connection, even pull out th esensor and give it a wipe down, just incase its dirty (thank Ross), we start off, great, brake light goes out, speedo working,....10 mins down the road same again....so that means its something to do with diff temp or maybe the wrong oil fouling the rear sensor, ..??? I dont know, but for the rest of the trip, (we stop for fuel) sensor works for 15mins, then stops working......???? And even then with no speedo or odometer working the car still ran fine, didn't go into limp mode or anything, but on hills seemed a bit lacking in power.

I'm at a loss.

Has anybody had this happen, speedo intermitantly working???? Thinking about heat being the issue, or wrong oil maybe???? Any gurus out there, I don't just want to buy a new sensor, if thats not the issue. Seemed to be strange as I say, when it would stop working, the brake light would also come on, which all seems to point at the rear diff sensor, but, if you stop for 10mins, it would all work again, then after running for 15-20 mins stop working??????

Signed

Dazzed and confused KJ man 1966..

or cmohr as I'm normally known

That's what happened to my speedo right before it died. Problem was loose connection of the wiring going into the speedo sensor on the top of the rear diff. I replaced the wiring and sensor and problem went away.

What probably happened is they lowered the rear diff too far and it pulled out the wiring somehow. If you lower the rear diff a lot you have to unhook the speed sensor first. I found that one out the hard way too.

OK , Thanks man,

I'll see if I can see any broken wires, I'd like to try fixing it rather than just buy a new one....but, I'll get a back-up one on the way just incase..

You may not actually see any broken wires. i had this happen 'bout a month & a half ago. Learned that it's a problem that is not uncommon. May want to do the following and progress to each step if problem persists: 1) replace speed sensor (rear dif), 2)replace speed sensor wiring harness, 3) check/replace tone ring (inside rear dif), 4) start checking wires from rear dif forward.

For mine i've done the first two but problem persists. Will be taking mine to mechanic next week as i don't want to get into the tone ring in the rear dif.

Good luck!

MP Jeeper & cmor - did you guys find a solution to your speedometer problem?

In May my speedometer died. I replaced the speed sensor which fixed the problem for a few months. Last week, my speedometer intermittently started to not work. Usually, it works for about 15 minutes in the morning, and then it dies and does not work the rest of the day. It then works the next morning. Sometimes it will "come back to life" for a little while, or it acts sluggish.

I have inspected the wires from the sensor to where they join the larger harness and cannot see any problems with the wires. I have taken apart the connector, and it all looks fine.

Thanks

check your connectors for corrosion. Mine had some corrosion on the connector once and I cleaned it out and it was fine after that. Also, were you driving off road. Every time you go off road that wire is at risk. I've disconnected mine 4 or 5 times now from various off road trips. I would replace the wire w/connector first since it is cheaper. If that doesn't work then replace the sensor.

Speedo still works for about 15 minutes after sitting for 8+ hours.

I am about ready to try another sensor. What are the odds of failing a sensor, replacing it, and havinganother bad sensor in 3 months? I have not been offroad, no damage can be seen. Is something taking the sensor out electrically?

I can tell you that it is likely a bad connection somewhere. Whenever something works intermittently it is usually a bad connection. That's why I would try a new cable since you already replaced the sensor. It's unlikely the sensor went bad so quickly. A sensor either works or it doesn't. But if power only gets to it intermittently it will only work intermittently.

Well, for the last few days the speedo is completly dead - no movement at all.

I replaced the speed sensor for the second time (the 1st replacement was in May 2009), and the speedo is working again!?!?!?

Could something be taking out the speed sensor?

Time will tell...

I am not sure what it means, but when I checked the resistance on the old and new speed sensors, I measured 380,000 ohms on the old sensor and 3,335,000 ohms on the new sensor.

Howdees, my speedo gave up this week, code P0500.
Shot up to 120mph and then 0. Then handbrake light, engine light and ABS.
All at once. are there any pictures anywhere where I can check the areas mentioned above?
