According to the guy here in Phoenix that runs the fuel farm, Aviation Fuel is and must be delivered by railroad car. This is a Federal mandate. The reason is that the purity of the fuel must be maintained.
Made sense to me.

Since diesel only has to have a Sulphur rating and I don't really care if it's 500 or 15 ppm, I get the cheapest or closest diesel depending on time.

Delivered where? I know for a fact that the aviation fuel used at Chicago's O'Hare Int'l Airport is piped in from North central Indiana. It travels over 100 miles.

Btw; when traveling cross country, it is my opinion that of all the major truck stop chains, Flying J has the best food and interior decor. :D

Exactly why I like them Oddball.

As for the fuel transportation discussion, I find it hard to believe that the suppliers would be mixing 20-30 THOUSAND gallons of one product with another, when they have a perfectly good way of separating the batches already - Anyone watch James Bond? From the opening of The Living Daylights, they show exactly what is used. Its a scouring plug. Put one in between each batch, and you have a handful (at most) of product getting mixed. Not a full railcar. That much waste is beyond comprehension.

I know that in Florida, the aviation fuels are pumped in by pipe from the terminal, because some genius managed to drill into the pipe feeding the Miami Airport from the terminal in Ft Lauderdale a few years back, and started stealing the fuel. For what, I have no clue. But they caught him b/c of the drop in pressure. I can't believe there wasn't an explosion.

Wherever is cheapest, which is usually safeway here. They had diesel for 2.26 last week, cheaper than gas, jumped up to 2.49 now.....

We have a couple of high volume stations around here. I go with whoever has the cheapest price.

"Scouring plug" might be the official term, I hadn't thought of or seen that. They are often referred to as "pigs." Not having seen this in operation, I've often wonder just how they are able to get the various products to where they need to be without massive contamination. Back when I worked for Ashland, they owned a pretty big pipeline network that Marathon would now have providing it hasn't been sold. I think it was generally to deliver crude from the Gulf up to the refinery in KY. I do think they have pipelines going from their site in KY that went to Canton, OH where one of their other refineries was located.

The regulation may state that aviation fuel has to be delivered via dedicated pipeline or truck. That would seem to make sense. One of the big problems with E85 for those other engines is that it picks up water too easily and can't be brought in by pipeline. If they were to perfect biobutanol someday, it doesn't pick up water as easily, so pipeline would be an option for that.

The thing that I run into is that the station with the cheapest price may still have winter diesel. Last month I went with a station with the cheapest priced diesel and my mileage went from 22.5 to 18.8. the only thing I can think of is that it was still the winter blend. The places with the highest volumes (truck stops) always advertise the price for the semi's and charge .20-.30 cents/gallon more for the same diesel at regular pumps. p!sses mehoff

So stop filling up at the expensive pumps. It IS possible to fill at the high-speed pump, you just have to use a bit of control on the nozzle. It may also be helpful to open up the inside of the filler neck with a dremel

I've got mine opened up so the thunder-nozzle fits right in with room to spare. I can *almost* get it to half speed if it is aimed just right.

That sounds so dirty. And like a good start to a low budget porno.

The station that gets the most use has the best fuel as the fuel is never in the tank for very long!

I have the GC with a larger fuel neck, and the larger nozzle fits just fine. The price difference has to do with taxes here in Indiana. It is illegal for me to use the tax free pumps at the truck stops to fill my GC. I'm not sure what the penalty is for getting caught, but I'm sure it's not worth it. I'll pay the extra $4.00 a tank to not find out what the penalty is. I just like b!tching about it.

Are you sure they are tax free and not something else? All of the tax-free diesel I've ever seen was specifically labeled on the pump as Off-Highway Only, and dyed red. I can only imagine the trouble a trucker would get into if another state checked the tank and found even a HINT of color in there.

How could they tell the difference for Indiana, if they don't charge taxes on it? Are you sure it isn't just a matter of the driver is supposed to pay the taxes directly to the state at the end of the year? Either way, there has to be some difference in the fuel. I wonder what it is.

Geordi

A long time ago I bought gasoline in Indianna and at that time the posted and pump price DIDN'T include sales tax. What seemed like a good price wasn't at the cash register  I suspect it's how/when the taxes are charged and it's different then the RED off road diesel.

I think Sarah should open a chain of bio stations to compete with Willie

Just for clarification, when I said that Aviation fuel was sent by railroad car, I was talking about 100 LL, not JP4, or JP5.
Sorry for any confusion.

If it is the one I think your thinking about, yes.
I believe it was to do with “Pounds” of fuel vs “Gallons.”
Most gauges have been updated.
