So I popped the hood the other day to check the oil, which I just changed 2k prior, and was just looking things over. I looked over at the EHM and crap, the brass cap on the plugged end to the turbo was no where to be found. Turbo was sucking air right by the filter. So I took it all apart and there was a good bit of dirt stuck to the inside of the tube and a trail on the intake going to the turbo. But there was no appreciable dirt on either end of the outlet of the turbo to IC. The turbo compressor blades didn't look damaged. I have no idea how long is was like this. However, my last UOA (post in that thread) looked good. I don't think it was that way long. I immediately changed the oil and filter and it's on it's way to Blackstone. I'll report back. What I think happened it this. I had a nylon barbed nipple in the end of the hose with a brass cap. I think the brass expanded more with under hood temps than the nylon and it loosed with time. This set up has been on for about 40K miles. Please give a prayer to the diesel gods that the engine isn't dusted.

Yes indeed. I have that same setup on mine - a nylon 3/4" garden-hose end with a brass cap. I will check it before I leave work today.

I have a PVC threaded plug in the hose to the turbo with a band clamp on the hose. If it goes anywhere, I will be extremely shocked.

My Rosemount Estates wine cork couldn't be happier in its new home--all snug.

I took a 3/4 by 3-4" long bolt and cut the threaded end off, leaving an inch or so of the shoulder & head. Deburred the end, greased it some, and slid into the hose, secured with a hose clamp. tie strapped it so it wouldn't hang down anywhere.

I got the UOA back and at 2k miles it had the same amount of silicon as a 8-10k mile interval. So I think I found it in time. But it is interesting that after 2k it had 10k worth of silicon. No increase in wear metals....yet.

wine cork sitting nicely after 57k miles. Probably should put a hose clamp on it...
