Ok left work today and had a workmate follow me no smoke screen today but just a little black smoke when pulling out from a stop to an 80klm zone. Punch it at every intersection and seemed all good wonder how long this will last. I still think a problem for me at least is that I changed to fully synthetic from dinosaur oil and maybe the synthetic is just to thin at start up will change it out in th enext week or so if I get a chance. Resetting computer in KJ seems to be a positive effect.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with using full synthetic. I'm pretty sure almost everyone in the US puts synthetic in their CRDs.

Because that is the only option listed in the manual. CI-4 0W-30 or 0W-40. And that's the only oil I would consider for any engine equipped with a turbocharger.

Australian Owners Manual older 2.8 CRD and we have a few 2.5's as well but mine is a 2.8 NON variable vane turbo, Anywhoo my manual states:

ENGINE OIL SELECTION VISCOSITY:

Grade 10W-40 is recommended for temperatures between 35celcius (95F) and -10celcius (14F)

Oils of the SAE 5W-30 grade are preferred when the minimum temperature consistently falls below -10celcius. If 5W-30 is not available, then SAE 5W-40 grade is acceptble.

OIL QUAILITY:

Use only Diesel Oils conforming to API (American Petroleum Institute) Quaility CH-4 or ACEA class B4

So I guess with the older types of Diesel KJ's we got the may not like the Synthetic stuff as it could be to thin anyway I just ordered a new filter and will be dropping the Synthetic stuff on Wednesday night. Afterall it is only time and a bit of moneyto see the difference and I won't be going lower in grade than my manual states.

PS still had some smoke today leaving work still not as bad but it is there hence the descision to dump the oil.

The next step will have to be plugging a scanner into your OBDII port and look at what kind of pressure you are building during these black smoke runs. The choice of oil should not have any effect at all on turbo spool up(unless you put gear lube into the pan), and if you were beaten by a dump truck, you have problems other than oil.

All that crap on your valve cover came from an air leak somewhere. The next place I would consider looking is the turbo charger itself and also the aftercooler.

The crap on the top of engine I think is from the overfilling of oil which I have fixed but yes a vacum leak is something I have thought of but scanner would be great to see the boost after resetting the ecu the lag is nearly all but gone smoke still a bit of a problem though.

Many members have stated that unplugging the battery will "reset" the Ecu, but from my limited understanding of modern EPROM systems, they should not loose any data, stored codes or operating parameters with this maneuver. From my understanding, the only way to reset anything in the ECU is through the OBD port. Perhaps someone more learned than I could elucidate.

I might start to look into the learning process of the transmission and see if that has anything to do with what is happening. Try to drive it had after resetting it so it learns to USE all the diesel it gets maybe.......

Your byline says you have a remapped ECU what exactly do you have and how did they do it? I have not seen or heard of anything like that here is OZ, the US boys are raving about GDE but they only do the newer models from my understanding

My CRD did the same thing "smoke and soot on take off". I cleaned and changed everything that needed to be done and it still did it. I then unplugged the the wire in to the air fillter, I think its called the ORM. At that point the problems went away. I then decided to install a SEGR. The Jeep has been running great. It latley has been starving for fuel a little but that is another topic.

got the ecu remapped as in the 2.5 crd kjs, there a flat spot when you hit the pedal ,so to get rid of it without afecting fuel ,i got it remapped, they remap the ecu with special bios for ecu to suit you,all done by computer ,dealer can pick it up

heres a link

http://www.autoremap.com/index.php?page=db
im thinking maybe i need to get it remapped again to suit its age and few months ago,the dead mans switch touched off ecu case even doe its alumimuin ,wonder if it had any affect.its also been show here specialy by rally guys who know there stuff that remapping ecu is way better than tuning boxes,so if i was to do again, would do the same

think the 2.8 in states is differently setup ,as i have a earlier 2.5 crd vmi engine, will check it out, there no wire in air box ,but theres something small causing it,just to track it down, cheers for helpp, every idea is a step closer to figuring it out
