Today I looked under the libby to find that the t-case is leaking where the housing for the rear output shaft connects to the t-case. It looks like it was siliconed from the factory. If i split it there am I going to have a lap full of crap or should that housing come right off so i can permetex it?

are you talking about the rear driveshaft or the shaft coming out of the t-case that connects to the driveshaft?

If the output shaft, there is a seal/bearing where it comes out of the T-case then after that is a series of snap rings, then an output shaft seal to keep dirt mud ect. out, then some more snap rings, a flange covering the aforementioned OPS seal, then a boot with clamps similar to a CV shaft.

If its the boot it shouldn't have fluid in there, just grease.

Oh and this is for a NP242 Tcase but it is almost exactly the same as a 231

between the housing for the t-case and the aluminum tail. before you get to the rear drive shaft. I think there are 5 bolts in it.

ouch man...

Well on either 231 or 242 if you take off the tail housing like your talking about you may get a lil fluid out of it, but not much. It is above the level of the fill plug. so you should be able to take it off and reseat it with permatex as you mentioned.

I would drain the fluid, and then do your repairs. and obviously refill..
