What the API doesn't tell anyone is what the oil companies have to change to make the oil fit the new spec. What may be missing (like zinc or etc.) may make the cf spec'd oil better for our crd than the newer oil.

In the case of the newer CJ4 oils, with lower zinc, phosphorus and calcium detergent addpacks, I'd agree in respect to metal wear levels in older engines. But that's not the case with CI4 oils.

The zinc and phosphorus additives aren't a soot dispersant, they're an anti-wear package. It's difficult to say what may be better based on guessing or speculation. The VOA chart posted some time ago on BITOG of commonly available oils showed Mobil 1 0W-40 to have Phoshphorus/Zinc levels very close (within 5%) to those of Mobil 1 5W-40 CI4+ API. Yet one is certified specifically to handle the higher soot loads recirculated back into the engine by 2004 and up diesel engines and one isn't. We have little to go on wrt to soot handling capabilities other than the CI4 rating.

Schaeffer uses a lot of molybdenum in their oil for wear reduction. Keep in mind, spec's on paper may or may not be what happens in the real world. I keep tabs on a lot of people who spend a lot of time analyzing real world performance of various motor oils. While a particular brand may look fantastic on paper, it may not actually play out that way in the real world. In my case, Amsoil had pretty impressive specs on paper, but the wear numbers on my Cummins in my semi went up using it. TBN held up good, but wear metals were not what they should be, even for a typical dino oil. Finally got things where I wanted them when I switched over to a synthetic blend from Schaeffer. Wear numbers reduced by 1/2. I then decided to use the Schaeffer 9000 full synthetic in the Jeep CRD. So.. price of the oil and impressive spec's may not mean much. I gave up on the Group IV is better than Group III synthetic debates or just following the brand that has the most glitz and advertising. I finally decided to go with a brand that one heck of a lot of the trucking and construction industries are using... Schaeffer. A darn site cheaper (maybe because they don't pay to plaster signs all over NASCAR tracks and run million dollar ads during the Super Bowl) than most of the store shelf synthetics and performs great.
