So I guess with the older types of Diesel KJ's we got the may not like the Synthetic stuff as it could be to thin anyway I just ordered a new filter and will be dropping the Synthetic stuff on Wednesday night. Afterall it is only time and a bit of moneyto see the difference and I won't be going lower in grade than my manual states.

PS still had some smoke today leaving work still not as bad but it is there hence the descision to dump the oil.
The synthetic oil is not thinner, the viscosity is more stable and resists heat better. 40 weight is the recommendation, and 30 weight only in cold climates.

It looks like that cool Irish company can tune 2.8s as well as the 2.5s. http://www.autoremap.com/index.php?page=db But $492 USD, ouch!

I have had this problem for the last couple of years it has been driving me nuts. Mine to is a 2.5 crd so far I have put in new injectors (they can now service them the technology has caught up) flushed the intercooler blocked the egr fitted an oil catch can fitted a K&N filter and cleaned the boost sensor a couple of times with little change.

The 2.5 doesn't have an airflow meter or throttle body.
I took it to a Jeep dealer to get the new injectors calibrated but they couldn't get their scan tool to work so they rang up jeep HQ and the 2.5's aren't adjustable

The biggest difference I have noticed is when I change the oil the smoke reduces for a little while but soon goes back to the way it was

I plugged in a scangauge and it didn't work

I have a mechanic mate I go 4wdriving with and he has noticed sometimes it will just smoke at random like at idle or cruising a big puff of black smoke will come out

Im going to start changing sensors to see if that helps but they aren't cheap in Australia so it might take a while

Cheers

Mine varies a bit somedays it doesn't smoke much then other days it has a smoke screen that James Bond would envy.

I would say mine is generally when the turbo kicks in. I genrally run 15w 50 oil because of the kms mine has done the last oil change I tried 20w 60 with little to no change yesterday I changed it let it idle for 10 mins and thenchanged it again and put 5w 40 in will see if this makes any difference.

I have not been keeping up with this thread lately. With all the discussion about oil, I'm surprised not to see a reference to the color of the smoke. If oil is getting burned, the smoke will be blue. Unburned fuel makes black smoke.

I have had a mate follow me to check the smoke and he says black diffinately diesel black smoke and yes it is a smoke screen when the turbo kicks in but it is suddenly hot here in queensland Australia Winter ended overnight and the smoke is no way near as bad to the point where I have started to stop lookoing for it.

...put on the Magniflow 2 1/2" cat back including removing the restriction in the Cat to muffler flange.
Right after I made the mod my back pressure gauge has stayed on zero after I blew out the Cat by driving on the expressway for a few miles.
Now I can't get it to smoke at all, not even the gray haze at night.
Also, I prefer the additional isometric exercise my neck gets, cuts down on neck pain.
May it be that your Cat is caked up or muffler is packed with soot and what you see is soot blowing out?
Having the Cat caked up or muffler packed with soot will increase back pressure and reduce boost.
Opening up the exhaust behind the Cat will heat up the Cat quicker, get it hotter and burn out the carbon cake that may be causing a restriction, then the engine can breath.
Just a thought

That was another avenue i was going to check out apparently cat is a particulate filter which catchs all the soot and every so often the engine is meant to run rich to burn it clean. not sure if this is true or not and if it is it could have something to do with it

What you are describing is a DPF (diesel particulate filter). We do not have a DPF on the KJ, we have a plain old catalytic converter. It does not trap all the soot which comes out of the engine, but it can get soot built up on it if you never goose it with a WOT acceleration, or some other high load application which heats up the CAT.

Then tie it up with some good wire and run the engine hard for over 10KM.
If it feels more alive you can save your Cat. Removing the restriction will get more heat into the Cat and clean it out.
If it is a dog when you hook the muffler back up, that is the problem.

Here is my post where I opened up the flange between the muffler and Cat: http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... hp?t=45768

Eureka Boy did it another way on his site.

Darby Walters has another way to do it.

Good job wtih the exhaust, its a shame you didn't get a before and after on the dyno just for curiousity. I might have to put it on my list of mods to do

I have been paying more attention to thesymptons of the smoke to help diagnose this problem.
One thing I have noticed is when it smokes really bad it is like it is flooding, this morning I took off from a set of traffic lights in it was really sluggish to get going until the revs got to about 1500rpm and then it took off, there was a huge puff of smoke to

Its almost like when a petrol carby car has a flat spot
