The limp mode occurs when there is an active p-code, which may or may not turn on the CEL. The limp mode is just an alternative fuel limitation curve based on engine rpm. It cuts about 40-50% of the torque output and limits the engine rpm to around 2800 rpm at max throttle. Only error codes that have potential to damage hardware will activate the limp mode, that said, sometimes it seems as if the limp mode is one for no reason.

The only way to turn off the limp mode is for the fault to clear itself or be cleared by a scan tool. Otherwise, you could turn off the engine for about 40 seconds and then re-start. This should reset the torque limitation, however it may come back if there is an active fault.

"may or may not" - what? - the computer flips a coin?

- that at least explains why we've had discussions about a 'true' limp mode vs the normal limp mode.

it's real common if you have an intermittent fuel problem

but turn it off and back on and it's okay.

Mine has always reset after about 30 seconds off. It's happened 4 times in 80,000 miles.
