Down here in the South we sometimes have big storms called hurricanes, you may have heard tell of such things. Some of you folks Downeast might be getting a taste soon, board-up, buy lots of beer plus generator fuel, tune up the chainsaw and good luck...

Anyway, we are entering the worst of the season and sometimes fuel is in short supply after a hurricane. I've run off-road diesel in my Dodge Cummins to get either in or out of a storm-hit area and, post Katrina, just to get around! What havoc will this play with my CRD? Will the stealer know? (8 yr, 80k warranty) Any mods suggested should this become a necessity? Just park the CRD and run the Dodge?

Thanks for your time and this great website!

where are you at? im in louisiana and have a water buffalo (2 actually) 400 gal stainless tanks for sale. im using one for diesel.

I'm on the NW Florida / S Alabama line.

And you guys are putting some thought into the red diesel thing, I've always been told off-road diesel is trashy compared to on-road but there's usually a filter on the farm/logging tank plus tractors and equipment tends to get more fuel filter changes. The story is that fuel distributors will regularly mix in anything from WMO to asphalt to 'make' more, hence the logo on older CAT machine fuel caps: "BUY CLEAN FUEL, KEEP FUEL CLEAN"... Perhaps this caution is a relic from another time, I don't know, but it's worth thinking about.

Filtering out or coloring over the dye may not keep you from getting popped with a fine if they do dip your tank. From what I understand, in addition to the dye, they also put in a chemical tracer they can easily test for - no doubt because others have already tried removing the dye or recoloring the fuel.

So while the red dye might be an immediate dead giveaway in most cases, it's not the only thing they're looking for.

Agreed. My comment was more toward the gents that are trying to figure out how to remove the dye and run off-road fuel currently in other parts of the country.

mcinfantry, my M35A2C burns just about anything too, I filter WMO through a five micron sock filter and run up to 50% w/ onroad, smells bad but what a bargain... I've run Nuto H32 (10w hydraulic that was suspected of being vandalized), left over drip-torch fuel (1.5 RUG, 3.5 offroad diesel), you name it. The M35A3, on the other hand, gets nice clean onroad only for that Cat diesel!!
