Well my CEL has been on and off for a few weeks now and it is showing an egr code. I know I will need to pull the egr but I don't want to do it with out having a new one in hand.
Where can I get a decent priced new one? I have been looking at one for about $170 on eBay with the gaskit.
Also when I get it off how can I find out if it's bad? Can I just put 12v to it and see if it opens or closes?
I have followed my girl who drives the jeep most and I noticed quite a bit of smoke under normal acceleration. Could this have anything to do with the egr? Could it be stuck open?????
She also noticed that the check engine light will go off for a while and when she used the a/c it would prompt the CEL to come back on.

Any help would be great! Thanks guys.

FYI -
MrMopar suggested taking the EGR off and soaking in some solvent - to see if you can clean it up
(I haven't pulled one but the comments sound like the gunk is obvious once it's off)

I can't answer your questions but MrMopar says you can take them off, remove the electrical part then clean them. You might want to give it a try :D

Did you try hammering the accelerator on a hard run and blow it out? Followed by the ORM, then a tune of your choice, say SEGR or GDE?

Yeah, I did do that a few times and the first time it blew out a butt load of soot. I was looking at the GED tune, but it looks like that they use the egr in there tune, not for anything important but it is used.

Is there a chance that it is stuck open?
I do have the MAF unplugged right now. so the CEL is always on now.

You may be getting a small bit of carbon holding the egr open and losing some of your boost pressure. This may be the cause of the smoke on acceleration. The couple hard accelerations for time to time may help keep it clean enough not to be a problem. If the valve was stuck open, the engine should be running very rough and lack any power. :(

I would think you would want to plug the maf back in to give some hard accels? But like the previous poster said, if you are not running rough, it is most likely closed. If that is the case maybe get the SEGR? Or, if you are able to scan the MAF signals, you could unplug the egr, and twist the MAF so that actual MAF values Match requested values. I totally removed the EGR on my TDI, and was able to turn off the CEL just by simply twist the MAF position.

And to think I was called a Newb on this forum 14 diesels later

Thanks for the input,
I am going to try to get the bugger off tomorrow, is it a pain in the butt? are there any write ups or instructions floating around?

Yeah maybe it has some carbon sticking it up, what is the most common failure with the egr's? or at least the most common reason the CEL will throw the egr code?

I would love the GDE deal but I am in the middle of buying my first house and can't throw the cash at it right now, soon I hope! Wish there was a more easy way to get rid of the egr and not have the CEL. The girlfriend doesn't like the light on and I dont either because then something else would go wrong and I wouldn't know about it.
Thanks again.
