I am kind of worried about those ceramic glow plugs. Is there any metal tip glow plugs that exists for the CRD? If anybody got the p/n.

Thanks.

Not available as of yet, if you are worried change the glow plug controller, this seems to be a cause of some of the failures.

Can anybody tell me if the glow plug controller is somehow linked to the ECU as I'm concerned that my particular problem with my ECU my just get worse and cause other malfunctions before i can afford to replace it :x

Yes,

When the ignition (key) switch is placed in the ON
position, a signal is sent from the sensors to the ECM
relaying current engine coolant temperature and ambient
air temperature.
After receiving this signal, the ECM will determine if,
when and for how long of a period the glow plugs
should be activated. This is done before, during and
after the engine is started. Whenever the glow plug
module (2) is activated, it will control the 7 volt high
amperage circuit for the operation of the four glow
plugs.
The Glow Plug lamp is tied to this circuit. Lamp operation
is also controlled by the ECM.
With a cold engine, the glow plug module and glow plugs may be activated for a maximum time of 200 seconds.
Refer to the following Glow Plug Control chart for a temperature/time comparison of the glow plug relay operation.
In this chart, Pre-Heat and Post-Heat times are mentioned. Pre-Heat is the amount of time the glow plug control
circuit is activated when the ignition (key) is switched ON, without the engine running. Post-Heat is the amount of
time the glow plug control circuit is activated after the engine is operated. The Glow Plug lamp will not be activated
during the post-heat cycle.

On my 06 I always thought my GP duration was too short in the winter. I even asked the dealer to do something about it. It seemed to be a hard cranker in the cold. Is that because the over heating glow plugs were resolved in the 06 build? Well maybe the GDE tune will give better cold starts?

...the glow plug indicator should never be on for more than a second (I am guessing). Even when it is cold -26C (-14f) it never seems to stay on for more than 3 to 4 seconds, at that temp the glow plugs will not be apt to over heat and crack. If you will tell us the coldest it ever gets where you are, we can tell you the longest the indicator should ever stay on. When it starts to stay on longer, yank the controller or fuse and order a new one, don't take a chance. That will most likely set off a CEL, but putting up with a CEL is much better than trashing your engine.

Thanks for all the help, this site is like a CRD rescue kit.

The glow plug module is mounted to the inner
fender between the battery and the master cylinder
in the engine compartment.

Cycle them twice.

It's a little black box tacked down behind the battery. It's labeled BOSCH.

If you simply turn the ignition off and back on immedeatly, the light won't illuminate.

Our glow plugs make a significant impact on the effort required to start our engines when they are cold.

That 2-3 seconds is long enough.

On a few occasions when i did not wait for the pre cycle to finish (or barely even start) it took 10-20 seconds of cranking effort to get the engine to turn over. whereas in similar conditions when allowed to cycle normally, it took only 2-4 turns of the crank, about 1 second, witch in comparison to warm weather, is about double the time.

Using the block heater (3+hours) seemed to reduce the glow plug duration to about 1-2 seconds in a condition that otherwise had the pre cycle at around 5 seconds.

These are just my observations. In San Diego I normally never see the glow plug lamp, however in TN while visiting my family in the winter it does get cold. In this case i'm talking about 5 to 30f weather

Been there done that many years ago on an old Ford 7.3 when it had a blown GP. Just does not seem something I should have to do on a 2006 vehicle. It already starts faster in the warm weather with the GDE tune, will see how it goes this winter.

Engine coolant temp. as well as outside air temp. deterimine the time the glow plug wait to start lamp is on. these values also determine the pre- heat and post-heat cycle of the glow plug. You cannot change the outside air temp but you can change the engine coolant temp. If you want to go easy on the glow plugs and your engine. plug it in for 2-3 hours when it gets cold. I have gone through 3 severe winters (-40C at times) and as long as the chill is off the block it always starts easy. I also installed a oil pan heater that works in conjunction with the block heater when the weather gets real nasty.

I can see you needing to go to such measures in Canada, I have not plugged in a diesel in my area since they went from mechanical to electronic, I don't even know if the engine heaters work, they are all virgins.

Up here , -40F real temps can be seen in the winter. I'm thinking the block heater will get a workout this season. And some anti-gel too.

This is a good post as I've been wondering why my light comes on every time I start the engine regarless of eng temp our outside temp. It can be 100F outside and the engine at operating temp and the light still comes on for 2-3 seconds.

Now that I've read this stuff, I have a feeling I'm abnormal......I mean the GP circuit, not me personally.

Maybe you better replace that controller before it's too late. I live the Houston area, and I can barely see the light flicker.

I could barly see my glow plug light flicker either for awhile once I realized what light to look for. Mine is only on for a second on most mornings its cooler. so far since I got my jeep its only been in the 40's a few mornings. If it has been in the upper 60's and up mine doesn't light at all. When I know its that warm I have just started to get in and start the engine with out waiting and she fires every time.
