Schedule B says every 15,000 miles.
Schedule A never mentions it..........not even once.

What's the deal with that?

I have to pay to get it done because I don't have a garage or the equipment and it's $189 at the dealer around the corner from me.

Do I really need to do it every 15,000 miles per Schedule B if Schedule A on the other hand says to never do it?

Wow that's super high IMO. Even if you went with basic synthetic blend lube, they are only about $8-10 from Autozone/Advance auto and it takes around 4 bottles, thats 40 for those, little more if you go true synthetic. couple hours of labor, maybe. Shoot, my Tahoe and firebird went 100K before the rearend fluids got changed, Tahoe still needs from diffy changed and it's @ 118K.
If you do get them changed and go with synthetic, they can go much more than the "recommended" intervals.

If you dont offroad or use it as a Jeep then longer intervals are ok. Only reason they want it changed that often is offroading and towing requires more of the drivetrain. Wont find that in those pavement pounders.

All you need is a wrench, gasket sealant, and a drain pan. As stated, pepboys or other places will recycle the oil for free. Save yourself some $. do it yourself, throw in a high quality syn like amsoil, and you are good to go...

The hardest part of the process is getting all the old RTV off the rear diff casing (with a scotch-brite pad, wire-wheel, etc). The front is just a drain plug, no that's simple. Save yourself some time and mess later and order a lubelocker gasket for the 8.25 diff in the back. It'll make your NEXT change take about 15 minutes.

Maybe I'll give it a try.

I just learned to change my oil last year, so I'm pretty bad at this stuff.
Have changed the oil about 6 or 7 times now though, and I also changed the spark plugs, so maybe I'll try to conquer the axles now.

Question: Can I leave the jeep flat on the ground without jacking it up like I do when changing the oil, or do I have to jack it up and get jack stands to change the axle fluid?

if you don't jack it up to do rear axle two things happen.. that make it less simple to do. gas tank if more in the way of the fill hole and you have to stop putting fluid in a half inch before it reaches the whole. when jacked up its tilted therefore you just stop when it starts coming out.. and its easier to fit the fill neck in there.

You can just leave it flat. I leave mine flat for the oil change but that's just me.
