From what I am reading here I can't help but feel that the programming for the glow plugs is different for colder climates. I can cycle them as many times as I want and the wait to start light will always come on, as well if it is +40 or -40 the glow plugs will always cycle just as it says in the repair manual.

How much are the controllers and are they available only for Jeep or is it a generic Bosch unit?

The programming is the same for all of North America. What is this wait to start light you speak of?

Stupid question....what happens if, in warm climates, if you simply pull the controller and do without the GP completly? I can tell you that my wife knows nothing about the light and simply hops in and starts the little beast.

I live in Canada and have had the truck about 2 years and have never seen the light come on.
It is beside the seatbelt light. I just tested the bulb yesterday to make sure it wasn't burnt.

I have the '06 and can do a bulb test on start up (maybe the '05s can do this to).

Glow plug light (red thunderbolt on the left hand side near the bottom) Page 8l-25 of repair manual refers to it as the "wait to start light". Also gives the duration the light should stay on when coolant and outside air temps are given to the computer.

The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors various
engine sensors. When the ignition key is turned to the
ON position, the ECM sends a signal to the glow plug
module to turn on, and cycle, the glow plugs for a predetermined
amount of time, plus illuminate the glow
plug light in the instrument panel. Once activated, the
element inside of the ceramic core of the glow plug
begins to glow. Each glow plug draws approximately 5
amps, for a total system amperage of 20 amps at 22°
C (72° F) ambient temperature. If there is a fault with
the glow plug system, the ECM will store a fault code
When the ignition (key) switch is placed in the ON
position, a signal is sent from the sensors to the ECM
relaying current engine coolant temperature and ambient
air temperature.
After receiving this signal, the ECM will determine if,
when and for how long of a period the glow plugs
should be activated. This is done before, during and
after the engine is started. Whenever the glow plug
module (2) is activated, it will control the 7 volt high
amperage circuit for the operation of the four glow
plugs.
The Glow Plug lamp is tied to this circuit. Lamp operation
is also controlled by the ECM With a cold engine, the glow plug module and glow plugs may be activated for a maximum time of 200 seconds.Refer to the following Glow Plug Control chart for a temperature/time comparison of the glow plug relay operation. In this chart, Pre-Heat and Post-Heat times are mentioned. Pre-Heat is the amount of time the glow plug controlcircuit is activated when the ignition (key) is switched ON, without the engine running. Post-Heat is the amount oftime the glow plug control circuit is activated after the engine is operated. The Glow Plug lamp will not be activated
during the post-heat cycle.

Bottom got scrambled when I pasted it from the repair manual headings should read: Engine coolant tempature, Wait to start lamp on in seconds, Pre-heat cycle on in seconds, and post heat on in seconds.
The times and values are underneath. This is what my CRD does, yours should too.

Canadian units do have slight changes in the programming miles to km on the speedo and odo. as well any changes to conform to our emmisions. I don't know if the latter applies to the crd

It would be good to double check this because my Owner's Manual says that the bolt is for Electronic Throttle Control and the electrical filament symbol (pig tail) is for glow plug.

My mistake, that's the one

I thought it was just the little round red light on the bottom left. Now I'm really confused.

The glow plug light is yellow and has a coil symbol on it. It has no script about waiting. As you may be able to tell I'm just being a turd.

Well, now that I know what to look for I realize that I've never seen it illuminated.......not even a flicker that I can recall.

Do a bulb test just to be sure it isn't burnt.

Clamp your alligator clip onto a 12V positive source. Touch the probe tip to the glow plug terminal, the test light or bulb should light up but not as bright as if you touch the probe to ground. The reason the light will be less bright is the resistance of the glow plug.

Good luck
