Some of the cheaper ones are not the right lenghth. They are too short and will cause problems. This has been found by several after they went that route and then had to R&R again in a few days!

as far as how to get the cv off of the inner shaft, you may be out of luck. Spray a lot of penetrating fluid in there. The axle is just held in by a little ring, similar to a snap ring. It is supposed to collapse and let it come apart with a little force. Mine was so rusted and gummed up that even with the penetrating fluid I had to drive the CV off with a hammer while I had the inner shaft locked in a vise. It ended up striping the splines off of the end of the inner shaft. Thus the need for the new inner shaft.

When I put the new one in, I am considering greasing it real well inside and trying to seal the joint with RTV or a sealing ring. Advance Auto parts has a "differential seal" that is crap (for a diff seal) but may work well for this. It is a small rubber ring that doesn't mount to anything. I wasn't impressed with it so I went and bought the dealer seal when I replaced my drivers side one. The Advance parts one could be RTV'd to the CV hub to create a seal when the inner shaft goes into it. I'm gonna try it anyway... Can't hurt and it is a couple of bux.

Just wondering, when I pulled out the passenger CV, the inner axle came with it (I'm guessing it's called an axle shaft in service manual). Can I just shove it back in or do I need to replace a seal or something now?

I just ended up swapping the inner shaft to the new CV and sticking it back in. Hopefully, there is no leaks. (fingers crossed).

The inner shaft came off by locking it in a vice and tapping with a soft hammer on the half shaft to break it free. Nothing appears to be damaged.

There is a clip on the ends of the intermediate shaft, make sure they are good or replace to be sure they are OK. From what I have seen the intermediate shaft starts to rust to the CVs and causes some problems. So if reusing, clean the threads really well and check them close

Well, it looks like I have this problem now on the passenger side. What is the total bill to fix?

from the dealer the halfshaft is approximately 180, you can get a napa remanufactured cv for probably anywhere from 50-90 bucks

In addition to the passenger halfshaft I replaced the lower ball joints, upper ball joints, front hub and bearings, front rotors, front pads, front bumpstops, front tie rod ends and front tie rod inners. Also, I added a clevis lift. In order to just take out the halfshaft I think you would just need to disconnect the brake calipers, remove the tie rod end, and disconect the upper and lower ball joint in order to pull the hub end assembly away from the halfshaft end. I also had to remove my strut though because the entire inner shaft came out with the half shaft which made it longer so that the clevis forks and struts were in the way. But that just gave me an excuse to do a clevis lift.

Depends on how bad it is, on 03CDKJs we did since it was toast. The splines were about gone. On mine since it just started to make some noise I may of been able to get by with outbut...., The CV and the intermediate were stuck together enough that it took a 3 lb sledge and several full swings to knock it loose. I had bought a new one for a great price over a year ago so went ahead and threw it in to be safe. Going to clean mine up for a spare though and keep it!

For the temporary fix, I can drive without the outer CV shaft.

Can I drive without the inner shaft if I can't seperate it?

If I can seperate it, Should I leave the inner shaft in until I can get replacement parts?

It seems really loose and knocking when I drive. I have a 200 mile drive to get home and then its coming apart for the temporary fix.

If it's knocking I would remove it ASAP.
Do not leave the intermediate shaft in it will come out or fall out anyways.
You can drive with out the CVs in, make sure you put a rag or something in the end to keep the dirt out. I know of a few who have run for quite a while with no CVs in.

If its knocking, then I would assume you have to replace the CV and intermediate shaft both, plus bearings/ seals just to be on the safe side.

I got it apart. There the inner shaft has definate grooves in the splines show that it has been wobbling for a while. The inner shaft did not come out with the half shaft. I tried pulling on it with heavy duty pliers and tried prying it with a large screw driver. It's not coming out. How is it suppose be be removed?

just pulls out, has like a snap ring type of thing on the end not hard to pull out, although I suppose maybe since yours has been giving you noise for a while it may be beat in there some. Try lightly twisting it back and forth while pulling. I can get you a picture of the end of it if it would help you understand it better.
