if this has been covered , I appologize for the repost.

K, brought my 04' Renny in for service and had them once again "adjust" my E brake , this would be the 3rd adjustment since I bought it March of 04. ( doesn't hold if the Jeep is running in neutral , and it rolls a good deal before it grabs when its not running, I always leave it in gear so it wont roll) The dealer was nice enough to good will it for me , however he also mentioned that Chrysler is aware of the this issue , it is common in the Liberties, however it's not a recall and probably wont be because it's a "wearable" part.

What I want to know is , did anyone else have this problem ?
What did you do about it ?, or if you have any suggestions what should I do about it .. Its not expensive but it sure is is inconvenient

Thanks, Jenn

Yeah our 03 has the same issue. The park brake on these suck...My b-i-l owns his own shop and he's worked on it a couple of times and tried to tweak it when he did the rear brakes and they still won't hold. I don't think they're big enough to handle the weight of a Lib. I think the brakes on my mountain bike are bigger than the park brake on the jeep...

They adjusted mine once and replaced the cable once. 10,000 miles (and now out of warranty) and I still have the same problems. You're right it can't hold the Jeep on a slight incline...worthless.

+1 I can 180's and 360's with it in the snow/rain :D A few scary ones in there though so I don't recommend doing it anymore.

EDIT: I also have drums

On my '04 Sport sometimes the e-brake grabs and holds, and when it does the Jeep is not going anywhere, but other times I can just about pull the handle out and it'll never grab. It's all to do with that "auto adjusting feature" that is just a POS!!!!

Since I drive a manual (that's the one where you have to shift gears yourself...a hard concept for some, I know) I can leave it in first or reverse and it won't roll, but that does not fix the problem. Jeep needs to fix the design of the e-brake system on these things. The regular brake system with the discs all around I think is pretty solid.

My e-brake seems to do ok. I live on a really big hill and when i stop to get the mail i always check it to see how it holds. It doesnt always hold all the weight but takes alot of stress off the tranny.

No problems with the e-brake on my 2005 manual transmission. I use it every time I stop, and sometimes leave it in neutral, no rolling or anything, just the settling you get when it goes from resting on the foot-brake to the e-brake (a slight roll, I suppose)

I Have that exact same problem. When I replaced my rotors the rotors were stuck to the e-brake (it locked up) Finally when I got the rotor off, the new rotor fit on perfectly but I havre to pull the e-brake up so high in oreder for it to grab. Good think I leave it in gear. This weekend I am going to take off my rotors and adjust, I'll let you know how it goes. Is it only an 03 renegade standard tranny problem? Thanks what it's starting to look like

No problems with my '02...I think that since the park brake on a drum system is the whole shoe it has a lot more surface to grab then a disk with a smaller drum/shoe for the park brake...

Are all these problems with rear disks? I have an '02 automatic with rear drums and my parking break works great. I even had a real dumb moment on a boat landing when I set the parking break but left the tranny in reverse with engine running and winched the boat onto the trailer. The KJ never slipped thank goodness!

Nothing to do with the tranny, its all the e brake.

The e-brake shoes are much smaller on 4 wheel disk brakes vehicles. They will not do the same job as wider and larger dia drum shoes does. To upgrade the e-brake would be a big job and you can bet it won't happen. Longer axels, deeper offset on the wheels, replacement rotors and claipers and pads. Will be very expensive for little improvement.

Sure it has to do with the tranny....If it's an auto then you put it in park and may never notice a problem with the e-brake. You only realize a problem with a manual because well. You can park it in neutral

I just tried mine with my auto and it held just fine. My driveway is on a steep incline so I'm sure it would have rolled if the e-brake hadn't been working right. Hopefully it will stay that way.

mine is currently parked on my driveway in neutral (automatic) with only the parking brake to see what the fuss is...I geuss drums are good for something.

To give you an idea of what my driveway is like since pictures don't do it justice, it is a typical suburban drive way (50' feet in length). It is fairly steep and always covered in ice (we have a dog so salting is not an option). Some of you have seen my posts about my dad's car getting stolen, well when the policewoman showed up, she parked he crown vic on my driveway. While she was talking to my dad the car slid down the driveway into the street...I dunno I thought it was funny

Mine wouldn't hold even if the lever was yanked all the way up. Dealer siad it was a broken self adjuster
and replaced the parking brake lever. Part number 52128715-AB. Only takes a short tug on the lever now for it to hold tight.

Hey guys thanks for all the feed back , mine is an 04 stick and I think this appears to be more of an issue for them as opposed to the automatics. Glad to see I wasn't the only one though, and as far as the lever position I was told that it doesn't matter how far up it is , (ie,the higher you pull it the better holds) eihter way doesn't work, had it fixed Saturday its rollin again! MikeP maybe I will looki into having it replaced . Thanks

Hills and snow does not mix, i know.
Image

You can see our hill still going down by that white house down at the bottom, it goes at least another 50ft before going out into the road. What sucks is if you slide out into the road, you could get hit by another car. I hate going down our hill in the snow.

ohh, my e brake barely holds.
