Hi there oh great men and women of the LOST forums, I seek your sage advice.

My Wife and I are thinking about our 2010 holidays, and I've come up with the idea of a road trip. The Wife seems interested as well, so I'm going to lay my "plan" out here, and ask for your advice.

We live in Calgary, AB, Canada, would head down through Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, End off in California. The trip home would be California, to Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and then Home. (proposed map below)

We would be planning to do some light wheeling (stock 2008 KK - maybe a small lift by then - 90% chance of new tires, and hopefully skids), as well as winery tours, and a couple days in Vegas.

So, here comes the advice part, a couple direct questions would be:

What's the best time of year to go down that way? We originally thought April 24 - May 8, however all of a sudden I remembered, there MAY still be some snow in them there hills - thoughts on the best time?

How do you all think my KK with the setup above fair in some light CO/UT trails? Suggested trails would be great too. I really do love the idea of getting out and seeing the gorgeous places that I've only seen photos of at the moment. The "Respect the Liberty..." threads in the photo section seem like it's stock, and it made it's way through some beautiful terrain.

Any other advice of any kind for this trip would definitly be greatly appreciated. Again, we're just in the planning stages right now, but maybe this will even line up to getting out and meeting a few fellow Liberty Owners and LOST members.

Now that the long-winded post is done, Thanks alot.

BrendonR

The wife and I made a work related trip west to California and went through some of those northeren states you mention, Wyoming for one, and it was in April and it was still very COLD  Our trip was in 1970 so the interstate highway system was not that far out west. We were driving a VW Beetle so off roading was not an option (we didn't trust the 66 Land Rover that far) and saw a lot of beautyfull sceanery just from the road. For any off roading unless your experienced I would try and meet up with a group. I've read where people have gotten in over their head and were killed rolling off clifs. That would be an awfull way to "end" a trip

Sounds like a fun trip!! I'd move it back to July so you could hit up some trails In southwest Colorado around Ouray, and then over to Moab, UT. For your drive north. I'd highly recommend taking Hwy 1 all the way up the Pacific Coast. That drive in itself will be one to remember for the rest of your life with tons of places to see and things to do. The drive up I-5 through the Central Valley of California is boring, with a capitol B.

X2 on most of what he said. That part of California is boring! Take the PCH up the coast OR from Vegas go to Death Valley to Sequoia / Kings Canyon to Yosemite then North the same route you have laid out. Should be lots of wheeling that way, if thats what you are looking for, and the most beautiful and varying scenery anywhere!

And looking at your map, you have Los Angeles as a waypoint, IMO I would skip that. No offense to anyone who lives in L.A., but not worth visiting.
