water heater woes

Well i got lucky, I was at work and got a call from the fiance about my theater having a wet carpet and the utility room is soaked. The thermostat and thermal shutoff failed, luckily the pressure relief worked. At this point this point I'm just happy the relief valve worked, I borrowed a dehumidifier and the carpets not wet enough to vacuum out. I would be mad, but I could have had a 40 gal steam powered bomb blow up in the house. To top off the luck, lowes had a 40 gal whirlpool with the exact same measurements as a 10 yr old hotpoint on sale for 200 bucks, an hour and half later...hot shower. Being semi new to home ownership, I'm taking the old one apart to learn how to change the anode rod and heating elements, I may even clean it out just to see how its done.

I'm glad to hear the relief valve worked too! That could have been ugly!

Good move on tearing apart the old one. Knowing how to service your water heater is a really good thing.

How good, in terms of quality and reliability, are the water heaters that use gas but only heat the water when you need it? Seems like a cool idea and would use a lot less money over time of ownership.

I looked into inline water heaters but found that if you want one that can handle two simultaneous showers, you would have to spend a lot of $$$.
Although it's a great idea, the initial cost would take years to recoup.

You will find that 90% of the time, the case will rust out before you have to replace any of the guts.........
