"In recent years Jeep has built a couple diesel powered SUVs (the Jeep Liberty diesel and the Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel). As the fuel economy becomes more of an issue, we look to technologies such as diesel - so keep your eyes on us."

“We continue to explore all types of propulsion options for not only the Dodge Ram 1500 but all our vehicles. Given the current economic climate, we continue to evaluate the light-duty diesel engine program. And now with our relationship with Fiat, there are many other propulsion options we may be able to utilize in the future.”

Well, one good thing is Fiat and VM are both in the same country, lets hope they can put more influence on US diesel production. The TC problem has been solved with the Euro TC. Maybe we need to demonstrate a GDE tuned Jeep to them, show them how a CRD should run in the US? They should be going after the market of people that appreciate the diesel, not the soccer mom's.

Fiat makes their own diesels - so the probable evolution would be a Fiat diesel option

(there are concerns the truck division could swap from Cummins to Fiat diesel)

yes Fiat makes some diesels of their own. I know that for sure just not if they make one the will be a good fit for a Jeep. there is a 1.3 litre engine they put in the little 500 city car that meets current euro emissions. I kinda like the 500 if I were to buy a car like that it would be that or a mini. if I could get only the Fiat 500 in deisel then it would be the 500 for sure.

Cat makes diesels, but they slap their name on Navistar engines.
Others do the same.
VM has a good engine as does Cummins, Fiat/Chrysler's objective it to sell cars and trucks.
Like any manufacturer, they only produce the components that are not cheaper to buy from someone else.
Bottom line counts the most.

Yes this is correct, the old Alfa Romeo 75 and 166 (1985-1998) had a VM engine, similar to the one found in the 2.5 diesel XJ (1988-2001) and Chrysler Voyager 2.5 diesel (1984-2001)

So for export there has been a longtime relationship between Chrysler and VM.

Fiat makes pretty good Diesel engines. Also ..not all of them are only 1300cc.

They have a 3.0Ltr (4-banger) too.

I keep bugging Chrysler powertrain executives about the euro spec vehicles not sold in the US, like the KK, JK, Caliber, minivan, Sebring, Journey (42 mpg hwy)...

Quote:
... more stringent emissions regulations in the US ... much more expensive to bring this vehicle to the US market ... not been able to develop a positive business case ... Stay tuned ...

If I were in charge the world would be a different place.
