Rant on my friend. You are absolutely correct. We have craap for diesel and then the government "bans" the small diesel motor claiming excessive pollution and then requiring extensive exhaust after treatment.
Its that collusion of big govt with big oil cause probably its more profitable for refineries to come out with that 40 cetane garbage than quality, clean, pro environment better economy diesel you have in Europe. All the US is worried about is running those 18 wheelers and say "OK" down to 3/4 ton rated commercial trucks.
Now let me end my rant!!!

Dont hold your breath.
I've already given up on Ford.

First they were gonna put a V6 version of the PowerStroke in the F150.
Dropped those plans. :x
Then it was gonna be a 4.0 V8 diesel from LandRover.
No chance of that now either. :x

It doesn't really matter anyway. With the EPA requirement for a DPF, any
economical advantage of a diesel is lost.
The 2010 F150 V8 gasser with six speed automatic gets 22mpg highway.
The F450 PowerStroke I drive at work gets 8mpg, unloaded, no trailer.

I know of 18 wheelers that get better than 8mpg with a fully loaded trailer.

I would bet the F450 has high reduction gearing and the winds up pretty high going down the road, even empty. Another factor is that Pickup drivers want the truck to be able to take on high line sports cars and out run them, this comes with a price of poor fuel economy, even with a diesel engine. Had Ford sold the truck with more adaptive gearing that drops the RPMs when there is no load, the truck would get much better fuel economy. Most of our CRD owners have the sense to lock out the OD when towing a large load up a steep mountain and ORT drivers know to drop a gear or two when doing the same. A lot of the Dullie crowd does not want to make the performance sacrifice and would go for a 1000 HP engine in a pickup just so they can pull that mega trailer up the mountain to the Eisenhower tunnel going 80MPH.

I agree totally that Ford, GM, Chrysler, and most of the other manufacturers have a bad case of Market Myopia when it comes to light duty diesels and our Moronic Government run by Burned Out Lawyers who know much less about the environment than a five year old with a back pack, making stupid laws. But when I comes to the F450, Ford built what the idiots want.

also keep in mind that gasoline engines are creeping up in efficiency too, so the atvange of diesel are being eroded on two fronts, spark engines are closing in and all this extra stuff (DPFs, SCRs etc etc) are bringing diesels down. they are about to meet and/or cross.

the best example is the Ford ecoboost engine technology which is being sold today with a BSFC of ~245g/kWh which is roughly 33.6% thermally efficient. they appear to be planning on getting the ecoboost technology down to 225g/kWh, which is close to 37% thermal eff. the most efficient gasoline engine I have ever personally seen had 41% brake thermally efficiency, (SWRI hedge 1), so that's about the upper limit. For reference most port injected 2 valve gasoline engines are 28%, and 4 valves 30%.

our little diesel has a peak BSFC of 200 g/kWh which for diesel fuel is about 39.5% thermally efficient. which by the way is much better than a port injected 2-valve (~12+% more efficient) but compared to ecoboost it is not such a lead anymore.

You got that right.

I dont know what the final drive ratio of the F450 is, but they are drag racing
gears for sure. It spins ~2500 rpm when cruising at 70mph.
The D-Max at work is much more sensible. Cruising at 70 is about 2000 rpm.
When pulling a 10K lbs trailer, it gets 10 mpg.

I too would really like a diesel wrangler, but I think I will wait until the second year its out as I want them (Fiat?) to work out the problems that will appear in the first model year and also don't want to be part of another "market test" and see the car dropped after 2 model years

Government is always the problem. And the eco nazis.

Two words - nuclear power. That'd cut emissions more that any amount of transportation could. Plus if we built enough nuclear plants, we could have enough energy to use our own shale oil (IIRC).

I know the fuel we have isn't as good as Europe. Besides the lower cetane what's else is wrong with it?

I think that diesel Patriot get about 55 mpgs.
