Can someone explain the difference between ultra low sulfur and low sulfur diesel. Can we use the low sulfur in our Libby's? Not sure if the low is only available in the larger nozzles for big rigs that won't fit in our tanks anyway. One of the fuel stations I frequent has both for the same price.

Low Sulfur is 500 ppm, for use in pre-2007 diesel engines, which our Libbies are. ULSD is 15 ppm, and is for 2007 and later diesels, they cannot run the low-sulfur fuel. Try the low-sulfur. Your injector pump and your right foot will thank you.

The real good stuff is the high sulfur 5000ppm stuff. It stinks oh so good.

One mod that will make your CRD happy to feel more like the big rig it wants to be, is opening up that fuel intake all the way. Getting the pipe out is a bit difficult, but it can be done. Then just dremel out the idiot restriction (leave the collar for the cap) and bingo - The thunder-nozzle will fit great. The only downside is you can't use the thunder nozzle at full speed, but if you push it all the way in so it seats against the inner pipe, it WILL fill faster than dead-slow.

Injection systems have always relied on diesel fuel as a lubricant but ULSD falls far short of the lubricity levels required to maintain proper injection system lubrication; at least without additional additives. The use of biodiesel blended with petrodiesel, however, not only provides the necessary lubrication, it actually provides higher lubricity levels than standard North American #2 diesel fuel ever did. :)

Try this site. that's how I found out where to get it in my area

http://www.biodiesel.org/buyingBioDiesel/retailfuelingsites/

Yep, I searched that site but the closest outlet is probably 50 miles away. I'll still probably go get some.

Alternatively, there are many quality diesel additives on the market ( I have personally used Power Service products with good results). They offer similar benefits to lubricity and typically offer a cetane boost. Some also offer an anti-gelling agent that will help prevent low-temp fuel thickening (Alabama MIGHT get cold enough to need it this year after the weather in the past few days...).

With respect to the higher-sulfur fuels, I've only ever heard of them doing three things: increasing performance, making emissions awful, and killing EGRs. I say stick to ULSD and add something for lubricity (bio or formulated) and get a clean-burning, happy engine for the long-haul.

I have been using PowerService since I got my little tractor. I went to wal-mart looking for an ingector cleaner and did not know what to buy for a diesel since I never had one before. I read some labels. I found that there were only 3 brands on the shelf that worked in diesel fuel. Power service, Prestone, and Lucas. Prestone is not high on my list, I have used Lucas products before I might buy that but I choose Power service because it was something about what all it did for the price and diesel additives were all they seemed to sell.
I used the Diesel clean in the silver bottle when it was warmer, it is more of a cleaner, cetane boost, and lube for the pump and injectors. Since its gotten cold I switched to the white bottle, that has less cetane boost but adds anti jell to the mix.

I am trying bio now too. I have 50% bio in my tank now, its 30°F today and I have not had an issue so far.

PowerService is the best stuff. Specifically designed for diesels, the colors of the bottles aren't just for show, they serve a very important purpose:

Silver is for SUMMER.

White is for WINTER.

Red is Diesel 911 for when you have a gelled fuel EMERGENCY.

Cool, huh? :D

Yep that is right. Wal-Mart stockes the silver and white bottle locally all year. only this last time I went to that isle did I see the RED Bottle. I hope I never need to use that either.

Funny story, the red bottle helped me out a LOT when I used it in AUGUST last year.

Yes, thats right... I had gelled fuel blocking my filter in the heat of summer. Actually it wasn't gelled fuel so much as it was a 20% mix of WVO that really needed a lift pump. 911 is GREAT stuff, got me going again until the tank was used up. That was the last time I tried blending filtered WVO into the diesel fuel. It worked great for a while, and I HAD figured that the summer heat would have been the best time for it... Filter said NOPE!

Most don't recommend using WVO in a Jeep CRD, there is a lot of data about this causing damage to the fuel injectors.

Really? perhaps you could post a photo or link to said damage.

x2... Also interested in hard data. I always FIGURED it was bad since common-rail setups and electro-injectors are more sensitive to viscosity of fuel and contaminants in general, but it would be nice to have some scientific research to back up the suspicion. I imagine the newer piezo injectors are even more sensitive (the new eu-spec jeep VM 2.8s use them).

It's not the injectors you have to worry about, it's fuel bypassing the rings during cold starts. WVO in your engine oil turns to plastic, causing lubrication loss.
