Hi all.
New to board.
Wondering about this f37 recall.
Is it necessary? What is it about?
Any time talk to dealer/ Detroit, they inform me of it.
Want to leave it alone, 05 with 6K on it, runs just fine.
Thanks for replies.

If dealer has not ever not F37'd your 05, - don't let them do it. It would be a good idea to pick up a spare TCU I believe it is, the dealer may very well flash your rig with the update if you are in for service sometime without asking. It is non reversible. Put in the junkyard TCU before going in for any service work. FWIW

Wow, only 6K on that 05.

If you ever decide to get you rig flashed with the F-37, lets trade ECUs first. An unflashed ECU is worth it's weight in Gold pressed Latinum. Welcome to the board.

I'll go one better: I'm willing to trade transmission computers with you (I have a spare and they just swap right out with no programming needed) AND I'll pay you for yours on top of that!

That way, you are all set if you do decide to go for the F37 at the dealer, just to get the upgraded parts.

Wow... 6k miles. Awesome that you got a basically new Jeep CRD, and welcome to the board!

Haha, nice geordi! Good luck with that...

For the record, if anyone else wants to trade their un-F37d TCM for my F37d one, I'll totally pay you too! 8)

How can I find out with out going and paying the stealer for a daignostic what recalls were done to mine? I am guessing since I bought it from Providence Jeep and it was sold new there to the first owner and serviced there untill I bought it all the recalls are complete.

Go to the dealer (without the truck, or just don't let them touch it) and request from the service writer a "VIP Report" print out. You will only need the last 8 digits of your vin number. Since you are the owner, it shouldn't be a problem to get this.

That will show all the dealer-done work on the truck, including the recalls. It should also show any uncompleted recalls. Do NOT let the dealer connect their scanner to the truck EVEN FOR CODES because it may possibly automatically update the firmware in the various systems in there. This is what you do not want. You DO want the upgraded parts from the F37... IF it hasn't been done.

Thanks all.
Wifes ride, orig owner, grocery getter, parked for winters, shy of rain.
She hasnt read about using the 4wd yet.
Has been at dealer for glow plug issues but not the f37.
Dont think it has been flashed as it still acts/drives the same.
Any way to tell?
Also is it the ECU or the TCU that gets changed?
What exactly does that recall entail, thought they just changed converters.
If buying spare tcu/ ecu what part numbers to buy?
I will try to get a printout of whats involved from my dealer but want to here from an other group of people to see their thoughts.
Thanks again.

I am wondering if some later built (2006) CRDs came with the TCM F37ed but still show up on the Jeep Website and Dealer Records as needing the F37?

My 2006...they always asked me if I wanted the F37 performed...I always said no...but according to thier records it has not been done. There was a delear authorization tag on the front radiator support that has a decal that is not legible anymore with a number I never could trace down. It was dated 1-11-2006 tho.

My final overdrive with torque convertor locked up happens at 64mph indicated.

If your torque converter locks in at 61-2 mph and the RPMs drop just below 2000, you'll know you have had the f37. Most of us have to accel up to 62 and drop down to 60 to get the best MPG.

If I am out of warranty do they still need to do the F37 parts if it has not been done?

Sorry for asking a dump question. I have not been buying nice vehicles that long. with the Subaru I had last I bought it a few years old and checked it for recalls. all there was on that was a clip they added to the throttle cable so it would not get stuck when using the cruise. when I inquired at the dealer for that they told me it had been done. that car was out of the bumper to bumper then too.

There is a BIG difference between a recall and a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) that should be clarified first:

A recall is mandated by the government to fix some safety flaw in the vehicle. It will be done free, to any vehicle that has the problem design. Warranty or age does not matter.
A TSB however, is something that the manufacturer has decided to 'upgrade' because of a design failure that may not cause any safety concerns, BUT may affect the life of a given component or system. These are also sometimes called 'customer satisfaction repairs' because they are done based on an individual vehicle's presentation of the symptom when not every vehicle of the same model exhibits the same problem.

The F37 is a TSB. It was discovered that Chrysler selected a sub-standard torque converter for the original installation in our CRDs, and they decided to repair them with better components. At the same time, they decided to reprogram the engine computer and reduce the available power output of the engine electronically. This can be un-done with a computer tune from Green Diesel Engineering (A much better tune than Chrysler's) or from InMotion. The second change is the transmission control computer was also reprogrammed to change the shift points of the torque converter, again to protect the STILL sub-standard part they were installing at that time.

The F37 TSB's torque converter part has now been upgraded a second time, and they will be installing the European torque converter part. Reprogramming of the computer to reduce the power output is still taking place however.

So in this instance, they do not HAVE to do the F37, but they will bug you about it every time your truck visits a dealer. There is a decent possibility that you can still get the parts and install done for FREE, which (if your truck is still running the original parts) you should want to do. But you have to then get the programming done too. The engine computer programming can be un-fixed for you, the transmission programming cannot. This isn't a HUGE thing for most people however.

Where the biggest difference in the programming is, is the power mapping for the transmission computer, for the individuals who desire to take their CRD far beyond the Factory power levels. I am one of these people. I have already upgraded my torque converter and the computer programming, but the transmission computer is still the same one that I had after the f37 was done to my CRD before I bought it. Unless you plan to squeeze every last HP out of your engine, the difference probably wouldn't even be noticed by swapping Transmission computers with me. Then you would be safe to get the upgraded parts from the dealer, and the lifespan of your CRD would be greatly increased. If you decided to get an engine tune in the future, Green Diesel would be your best bet for their ECO tune, which adds an average of 6mpg to the CRD.

Gerodi, thanks for explaining that. I will have to ask for the VIP report. Then see whats on it. I assiume that this is something they should just give me with out any trouble. I have to go into the local dealer and order a new trim piece for the roof rack that went MIA again, so I will ask then.

My truck has been through a bunch of stuff at the dealer I bought it from there was something wrong with the instroment panel unit that they claimed was caused by a mechanic damaging it when jump starting it so they replaced it before I could even look at it or drive it. then after I bought it we noticed that it seemed to be going into 4 wheel drive but the indicators were not lighting and I discovered the cruise and alarm it was to have didn't work. I had to take it back to have it hooked up to starscan again and reprogramed. I'm would bet since I asked them to take it back into service they made sure all the software was updated. The dealer I bought it from is not close by so I don't want to have to drive over 30 miles to Quarryville unless I need to.

I think in a past thread there was something in a thread about your build date affecting what Converter was installed and if the F37 TSB included parts or just a software change.

I realy don't care to push every pony out of the engine at this point. I just drive it and enjoy it for now and it goes fast enough so far. I have not towed anything but a utility trailer to bring an applaince home, however I have been looking at campers. I seen a nice 19 foot Starcraft Antiqua Hybird that looked very comfortable for its size.

You can also check the Jeep website for any un-done recalls or TSB's:

http://www.jeep.com/en/owners/

Just enter the last 8 digits of your VIN in the box below and to your left, and it will show what their database says you need. Unfortunately, mine needs none. :(

Thanks for posting that. I have nothing undone. Recalls or TSB's

Again, thanks Geordi for the explanation.
much clearer what is needed.
that reprogramming can really add 6 mpg's?
that would be 34mpg on hwy...
How why would factory program be so far off?

Bean counters? Either way, if you click the "fuelly" link in my signature below you can see what kind of mileage a GDE Eco Tuned CRD can get! I improved from around 27-28 to 32-35!

Driving habits, tire size and inflation, fuel quality, and % of highway driving affect it more than anything. I gained 3 mpg with the tune over stock, but I have some other mods to help as well (freer-flowing exhaust, Royal Purple in the pumpkins) and one that hurts: bigger all-terrain tires. I also drive 80 on the interstate, spinning the mill at about 2400 rpm.

The tune helps, but there is a lot more to it than that.
