I could search through the forums forever...but I'm not really finding much.

What are you guys doing for "cold air intake" kits on the CRD?? Is there anything available? I'm trying to catch back up again after being out of a CRD for 3 years.

A set-up like this would be pretty easy and extremely effective...

Or even better drop a few ice cubes in your air box and you're good to go

Dont waste your time and money. Put a V6 air box in if you havent already then install an Amsoil EAA204 filter. That's enough for that engine. Get a snorkle if you want. That way the intake air is above the ground and less dust enters the filter element. Its not about crossing water. :JEEPIN:

X2. Because of the high-velocity function of the turbo, a cold-air intake does not benefit you nearly as much as it would on a naturally-aspirated gasser. Why spend the money there when a new exhaust or a set of Smaco hoses would run you the same amount?

If you live in an area where it rains and you have to drive outside, I would also suggest the V6 airbox. Living in South Louisiana, rain is a strong reality for me here. I noticed water and leaves collecting in my airbox and dampness on my air filter before doing the mod. Since then - a little moisture in the bottom after driving in a heavy rain, but the filter was nice and dry. I also have the Amsoil filter, though I could not tell you if it is really all that beneficial or not.

I put a 2.5" mandrel bent intake on, with a AEM dry synthetic filter. not really any more MPGs, probably no more power either, but the turbo sounds much better, it really whistles.

knowing what i know now, i would have just used Fram paper filters in the stock box, but I tossed out the lid to the box and cannot go back. anyone what to trade?

OK a lot changes in 3 years. :) How does the V6 airbox differ from the CRD airbox? Are you talking about just the box...or the tube too?

Since we're on the topic of air induction systems, I'd like to bring up a point that I believe is overlooked sometimes.

As I'm sure most people know, the engine compartment of the KJ is very tight and compact indeed and as such airflow is very limited. If you were to instrument the engine compartment with thermocouples, what you would find is that when the engine is working hard in hot weather, there is a lot of air that flows thru the radiator and due the space constraints, recirculates in the engine compartment and due to the direction of rotation and the shroud design, it recirculates in the passenger front corner of the compartment, even in and around the opening where the hood closes against the tops of the fenders, the grille, etc.

If you look at the design of the V6 airbox, it draws fresh air in from the gap between the hood and grille. While this is good maybe for preventing water and debris injestion, it is inherently bad for prevent hot air from entering the airbox and as such the engine breathing it. The OEM KJ airbox, while slightly less efficient for water intrusion, is considerably better in terms of thermal management for the induction system. For those people who have just a conventional "cold air intake" where the filter element is open under the hood, then it's even worse for thermal management.

The thermal management is important because in trailer tow situations, it can generally be predicted a certain rise between the incoming air to the compressor and the actual intake air temperature in the manifold. For a given boost pressure and CAC efficiency, if the air coming in is too hot, the air coming out of the turbo compressor will be too hot and, consequently, the intake temps (after CAC) will be too high as well. All of these temperatures are critical for long-term component durability, most especially the life of the compressor stage of the turbo. Additionally, if the intake temps are too high you might also be faced with some intentional performance decrease.

If you foresee trailer tow, hot weather operation, or other similar activities in your future, you might give some consideration to leaving the stock parts alone or, if you're the tinkering type, find a way to route differently the hose that feeds the bottom of the airbox from a different location.

Here is a link to Mopar Supercenter, that sells it as a kit item:
http://www.moparsupercenter.com/liberty ... ml?cat=162

And here is the link in the Tech Section that talks about the difference in design compared to the stock airbox:
viewtopic.php?f=98&t=21828

Basically the V6 Airbox has it's air inlet in the gap between the hood and the grille above the starboard headlight. It is a wider but shorter opening and does not allow as much debris and water into the sir intake system.

However, MrMopar's contribution makes a snorkel look that much better. Sawzall, anyone?

Sawzall? I don't think my CRD would like it much if I approached him looking to do some redneck bodywork... I like the shiny parts the way they are.

Now, if there was a way to design a snorkel that only modded the plastic at the base of the windshield... I'd be all over that.
I haven't had any problems so far with water or dirt entering my stock airbox... But then again I tend to cross rivers using a BRIDGE.

So no redneck bodywork, but redneck silicon hoses are OK?

Wait for it. . . . . :furious:

Hey now... One is a repair to restore functionality in an economy that means I can't afford either the factory failure hoses OR the high-quality high-cost upgrade option.

The other is altering the shiny parts to gain some small unproven amount of functionality. The cost for not doing it perfectly the first time is having to unbolt a fender that will never be back in exactly the same fit again.

Totally different animals. I'm not adverse to adding a snorkel to the CRD, but trying to do it myself when my CRD has been breathing fine so far (and doing the kind of heat-generating work that Mr Mopar talks about) it is a dubious upgrade for me. I've done cold air intakes on my other vehicles in the past, and the only one that had a significant upgrade in performance was on my 6-ton RV. But admittedly, the factory air system on that engine was SORELY lacking. I went from a ~600 cfm carburetor to one that inhaled over 850 cfm... THAT required a bigger intake line.

Do our CRDs inhale that much?

MrMopar.

Would leaving the engine shroud off in the summer months help or hinder? Mine is on so I don't need to find a place to store it

The engine cover doesn't really do much/anything for heat management. It is more about "aesthetics" and some noise-control advantages. So, taking that for what you will, you can decide if it's more useful on the shelf or on the engine...

OH ok.. I've seen that airbox before. I think my wife's 04 KJ V6 had that setup on it. To me, that would seem more restrictive than what the CRD has already. So no thanks.

I'm thinking of a true kit with a solid tube and a conical filter on the end. Kind of like what AEM, K&N, etc. offer for the Cummins engines. If I find something like that...I'll be all over it like a cheap suit.

spent only $30 bucks and did a custom air intake.

First, getting more cooler clean air to this engine will show improvements. Having a "turbo" does not mean that you can not do anything to improve performance...I don't know why that sentiment always pops up? As MrMopar stated, to make any kind of real performance gains you have to find a way to get cool fresh air in the sytem and keep hot engine bay air out of the system.

I made the V6 airbox mod and then with coroplast formed a cold air scoop using a grill slot ahead of the radiator. I also sealed off the snorkel from engine heated air with weather stripping. It is not perfect by any means...

The first of the seven slots on the passenger side of the grill has a "grill block plate". The next slot over is where the cool fresh air enters. The air comes in that slot and the grill block plate acts as a "catch". I then formed a makeshift airbox with coroplast and directed it into the "sealed snorkel". Then put an Amsoil EA filter in the stock location. Very cheap...

Nice work :!:
I have been looking for a larger inexpensive air box.
